Well, I found the problem, but it's baffling.
After swapping other textures in, it seems there are some files with bad ICC profiles, and that is crashing the renders.
Specifically, one JPEG used as the color map for one part of the prop is killing every render. Fortunately, it's a small part that's easily hidden, or if swapped with another texture, is so small that it doesn't show.
I'll pass it on to DAZ and see if they will institute a fix.

bhoins - thanks for the clear explanation. I think I'll live with the overnight renders for now, and see what happens come the summer, perhaps some price drops of the then older cards...

Many thanks, all, and I shall try playing with the morphs (so many, I forget all that there are).
FWIW It was my intention to make a male character with some of the secondary sexual anatomical features of a woman, just to complicate the pictures I do.

PhilC - I'll try using your utility, stripping out the rest that I don't want and hope it works.
CleanPose looks intersting, but seems unavailable and I don't want to batch my way through my runtimes.
