It is a Canoscan N1220U. It says that the scanning element is through CIS (contact image sensor), and the light source is three colour LED's.

Just another question. There are two scanners I can get, both are virtually the same price. However, one is utilizes an LED scanning system, the other a CCD. Which would be preferrable? The CCD scanner is a lot bigger but has the advantage of being able to scan negatives, apparently. Thanks

Thanks everyone. Bloodsong, what you said works like a charm. Low, near zero diffuse lighting and high ambient lighting dampens the shadow right down. It looks a lot better now. Thanks all!

The materials for Realsoft amaze me... when you look at some renders you'll see what I mean. The feature list too is very complete; even compared to applications like Lightwave and MAX. I want Realsoft!

The handle is bumpmapped, just can't see it 'cause it's a dark texture. Handle is meant to be quite dull since it's quite old, but yeah I agree it needs more specular. Rarely do katana's bear engravings. I just had a quick look at my sword, and the temper marks have a blurred reflection, but the rest of the blade doesn't. Dunno how I'll simulate that though...
