Thread: Genesis 8 / Victoria 8 Released | Forum: DAZ|Studio
So far in very brief testing I'm liking the Powerpose Expressions quite a bit. In fact, Powerpose in general seems to work a little better than before, which is a nice upgrade.
Sometime around Christmas, I'm looking forward to doing a lot more with this, especially when Blacksmith 3D puts out a G3F to G8F skin converter and we get a lot more shapes.

You can already copy morphs over without using GenX; just use the transfer tool, but you'll need some external modelling for clean up.
Also this post from the person that made the mesh, which explains the changes in G3 and UVs:
Veeeeery enlightening -- thanks! (I still think a converter will get made -- I'll just be increasingly impressed when it is.)

Oh I agree. Pretty confident somebody will find a way to get skins from older Generations working in some form. But converting them the usual way doesn't work.
Which is the biggest reason I'm going to hold fire before moving my production to G3F -- I have a pretty good sized library of V4, Genesis and Genesis 2 skins. I'm either going to need to hold off until someone builds a bridge, or until there's enough quality skins at low enough cost to build a new one.
Or, well, until you put out Skin Builder Pro for Genesis 3 Female. :)

I've found that if you have an nVidia card without a lot of RAM but leave CPU rendering active, it will still cut the rendering time way down from going CPU only. So far, I'm really happy with it -- I'm actually thinking about getting an accelerator card to boost things way up.

Some things are not compatible like skins. With regards to other content, I'm pretty sure people will figure out a way to get them over. We all still trying to find out what can and cannot be made compatible in a way that is usable.
I said this in another thread, but I'll repeat it here as well -- I'm actually pretty confident someone will build a bridge for skins, because they always do. Yeah, I know. I'm replying to Zev0, who knows more about this than almost anyone. My money's still on the table saying a conversion tool will get made. People are amazingly clever and no one's ready to give up their Sabby-skin collection.

Like a lot of folks I grabbed G3F and the starter stuff, and I've been playing around with it. It shows a lot of promise -- I love the expressiveness of the G3F model, and posing is looking really cool so far.
So, somewhere around Christmas, I'm looking forward to grabbing some V7/G3 paid content.
Why so long? Because it'll take some time before critical infrastructure moves into place. Morph packages beyond the initial run. Clothing that really takes advantage of the new tech. Skins. Skins. Skins. Also skins.
It'll also take time for the development crowd to build the bridging tools. Right now, I have a huge investment in (that word again) skins. I have to believe that someone will come up with a converter that will let us use G2F and G2M skins with G3F. Similarly, I have to believe that Dimension3D will come out with Gen3X to let us migrate morphs. It won't necessarily be easy, and the results may not be optimum, but it'll happen.
In the meantime... Daz3D isn't going to stop producing G2F content tomorrow. There's inertia to these things. For months to come, Daz will still produce things for G2F and G2M, just like they've released 3Delight/Uber shaders after IRay came out. There's a lot of producers who have a lot of stuff in current development -- those pipelines don't close the instant things change on the tech line.
And when the G2F/G2M/et cetera pipeline at Daz does dry up? Well, I have a Renderosity membership for a lot of reasons, and one of those is legacy support. Looking at today's "What's New" page in the Marketplace I quickly count 14 products with explicit support for Victoria 4 or Michael 4 (which also means support for G2F/G2M for my purposes). So long as people are buying content for G2F/G2M, content will be made for them, the same way that content continues to be made for Victoria 4 and her ilk. Gen2X also means I've been able to move my G2 stuff down into Genesis with little trouble, so I've never felt like I couldn't keep using Genesis as needed. I again assume someone will be amazingly clever in building 'downgrade' bridges. They always are.
(And yes, I realize Poser is a major market for continuing V4 support. That doesn't change the fact that I can use most of that content with my current figures, which are pretty much all Genesis 2. For that matter, that doesn't change the fact that I actually own Poser too.)
So, chalk me up as someone who likes the look of the new generation and the direction of the technology, but who doesn't plan on investing in it until there's a broad base for it, especially because his current tech's not going anywhere and is going to have new stuff come in for it for a long time to come.
(Besides, that's money I can spend on IRay shaders. That's the technology I jumped into on day one. Soooo much money falling into IRay shaders....)

Edit: I want to add that I do understand the hesitation -- because what a headache if some customers take a warning in a readme that Poser works but isn't supported to mean that use in Poser should be completely error free and easy! So I get why even that might be a problem. (All I wanna know is whether the mesh will explode or not. :))
I really love it when vendors are clear about expectations. "Has not been tested in Daz Studio" tells me that if I want to grab the piece and use it in Daz, it may well work, or may need to be tweaked, or may not work at all -- it's at my own risk. (And a lot of the time reviewers will then follow up with their experiences.) "Will not work in Daz Studio" tells me not to get it at all.

It's worth noting there's nothing singling Poser out for this 'treatment.' I own both, but use Daz by strong preference (to the point that I actually spent the money on the different technologies so I can migrate V4/M4 content to G2F). I just find it easier to put scenes together in Daz.
However, when shopping on Renderosity, I have to keep my eye out for the different items that only work in Poser (or won't work well in Daz). IBLs and similar sets are perhaps the most prominent of these. And sure, I spend half a second wishing I could get the same stuff for my preferred program... but that's all the time I spend on it, because this is just how it is. Poser and Daz are different programs, and both have large user bases. And the people who sell here on Renderosity work in one, the other, both or (admittedly rarely) neither.
And, as I am not God-Emperor and they are not my slaves, there's absolutely no reason for me to expect them to make the products they're making exclusively for my preferences or for my benefit. I'm just really glad there are lots of talented people who are making things I can use.
DSON doesn't work well for you, apparently. I'm sorry to hear that. I'm certain it's frustrating to see a fantastic character and then realize you can't use it effectively the way that you want to. However, that's life in the competitive marketplace -- just the same way that you're going to run into cool looking Windows games if you're a Mac user, or car stereos that take double-din space and connectors you don't have in your car. Not everything's going to work for you.
Realizing you don't like Daz, have you tried loading the character you want to move over into Daz, adjusting the look and feel, and exporting it as .cr2 instead of trying to use the DSON importer? It doesn't work as well for me, but some people apparently have really good results with that. Is that a possibility for you?
