By default, WinXP puts a firewall on all Network connections. Go to the Control Panel and click on Network connections. Right-click on your Internet Connection and select Properties. I -think- there the firewall setting is within that window somewhere. I can't check myself because I'm using AOL as a temporary Internet solution while the cable is prepped in my area. It's got a slightly different setup. You should see a radio button referring to protecting your connection. That's the firewall. Uncheck, reboot, and reconnect, and you should be on your way. Hope that helps! -Jon

Thread: If CL's new security measures for Poser 5 bother you consider this... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Just some food for thought... How many warez kiddies would have bought Poser if no warez version were available? The likely answer is very few. Hyping up the so-called revenue loss due to piracy is a crutch. Elaborate, and ultimately, defeatable security measures are simply a way of assuming guilt, making legitimate users prove their legitimacy. I can understand gun-shy software producers wanting to protect their assets, but consider this: A convenience store near me is the victim of frequent shoplifting. Now, store employees will follow just about anyone who comes in, legitimate or not. I used to go there quite a bit, as it was on my way to and from work. Finally, I got tired of being shadowed, and decided a Circle K down the street would be the recipients of my business. My bottom line here is, I will not be getting Poser 5 until this nonsense is done away with. I will be looking very eagerly towards DAZ's project, and hope they'll learn from CL's folly. Jon

Oy vey... Now is NOT the time to bring this stuff up! Sure, hard feelings among individuals may negate everyone from gathering together and singing "We Are The World", but it is CERTAINLY not the time to create even more division. I see this as way for people to gain some understanding of why Grey and Willow felt, and still feel the way they do. It hurts getting bit in the ass. Now Jack, Ed, and the rest of the former admins know. Now that there's a little common ground, there is a chance for a little community reperation. I know that there are people on both sides who will never trust one another. That's their perogative, and I won't waste my time trying to sway anyone. Jack, you do know that it's not going to be easy going during the coming weeks, months, etc. Some folks feel that you've done them wrong. I can't dispute, nor support those feelings, as they are personal between you and the parties involved. What I can suggest is that you and Ed take the opportunity to meet privately with Grey and Willow, and have some sort of "Summit" meeting. Don't make it public, don't save logs with the intent of making them public for all to see at a later time. Just hash it out. You know how it feels to be royally screwed now. You can sincerely empathise now. I say don't waste the opportunity. JonRD

Hey, Tim, did you just cut and paste that post from one of the archives from a year ago? It sure reads like one you made when you guys screwed the previous owners. JonRD
Thread: Other forum removed post! | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
It's funny you should mention that, Allie. OF course, any chance you can get to defame the PFO is one you'll jump on in a second, so it doesn't surprise me. Would you all like to know what may have led to the removal of her post? I don't know myself, but I can speculate. She came in and asked questions. Now, the way she asked them was rather condescending (reminded me a little of ALLIE, te be honest). Still people answered. Rather than offer any sort of thanks, she just continued with questions, and we still continued with answers. Finally, she posted this: "What are you users doing with your software? Are you creating cartoons, doing web stuff, are just showing it to your kids? I've only seen one good production and it's the mpeg file on metacreations website." Now, on the one hand, it looks innocent enough. She wants to know what people are doing with the software. That's fine, however, the tone, in context with her other posts, is rather cold and condescending. I gather that her main interest is in animation, since she's a producer of a small time cable show. That's cool too, but the idea that came across with that "The only good productions..." bit was that everything else was crap. The replies seemed to indicate that, yet she never offered to clarify it. Those of us who are net veterens know that it's hard to convey emotion in cold text, so we sometimes HAVE to clarify. She didn't have to, of course, but it's good netiquette. It's sad to see that so many are blind to the good that lies in the PFO. Unfortunately, people tend to be sheep and will believe anything someone says, just because it sounds good. I'm not trying to cause trouble here, but I feel it's necessary to have at least one opposing POV in this thread. Take it or leave it, flame me if you will. krbtv, if you like it here and can get help, that's fine. By all means, stay. Just don't go basing your opinions on what other people say. Investigate for yourself. JonRD BTW, 20 virtual bucks says she won't reply to this thread.
Thread: ..and it continues to fester... | Forum: Community Center
I suppose this post is useless, but heck, I'm gonna post it anyway. Take it or leave it. I have been guilty in the recent past of slinging mud, and even resorted to childish name calling and generalizations. After really thinking what I, as a Poser user, and artist have to gain by being vocal in my opinions, I've found that it is nothing. Absolutely nothing. I've done a bit of soul searching this morning and afternoon, and I've come to the conclusion that whether I vent, or try to show support; whether I try to ecourage peaceful co-existence, or keep the wounds fresh, it is all but a waste of my time and energy. I agree with WarriorDL's position, and disagree that what he's doing is wrong (per 2ndplanet's post above). Yes, the world is for the most part free, allowing people to speak their minds, but discretion needs to be considered. I won't ask anyone to stop posting their minds, because it's not my place. I am just a visitor here, and nothing more. I do wish to say that how in any way is a post like dmayberry's above anything more than "Naa-na-na boo boo!"? I can picture the rest of the choir sitting in front of their computers nodding along, just like the preacher groupies at a Southern Baptist convention. Anyway, as I said already, this post is useless, and I really can't wait to see what kind of response--if any-- that it gets. JonRD463

Diane- I just did. I'm not out to fan flames, or keep the war going. I am, and will always be Pro-PFO, but I am anti-immaturity. Hopefully my words there will speak for me. JonRD463 "Look for the ridiculous in everything, and you will find it." -- Rober Smith, The Cure

Steve & Afrovision, Just to let you guys know, PAN has moved over to the new forum at The REAL Poser Forum. I know you all probably have email addresses exchanged amongst yourselves, so this may be old news. Just thought I'd pass the info. Jon (Who had better be left damn well alone as far as SPAM goes!)

Floydd- Yeah, I noticed that too. I originally downloaded it from Fun Stuff, but I don't think it's there anymore. You might want to email them (Hojer is a family name, rather than an individual... I think) Here's the email address, if you don't see it on their site. hojer@swipnet.se The files in question are SHAIR.ZIP, and SHAIR2.ZIP. Both are based on the same shape, but one is more of a solid "box", and the other is this David Boreanaz / Tom Cruise hybrid. Both are worth getting, tho. g Jon

Whoa, that's pretty cool! I especially liked the lightning! Now, you know I've gotta ask-- is that just the result of artistic talent, or is there a program/utility that automates lightning creation? g Jon (who apologizes for the OTness of this response)
Thread: for all the Poser Vets: How to make bump maps?? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I've always thought it best to convert the original texture to greyscale, increase the contrast on it a bit, and use varying shades of darker greys to make the bump effect. If you're wanting to make a skin bump for things such as pores, try doubling the dimensions of the texture, and adding monochromatic noise (just a touch!)Increase the contrast to make the "noise pixewls" stand out more, if you want a more "rough-hewn" skin texture. Also, play with the bump map slider in the Surface Materials section of Poser. Hope this helps! Jon

I was playing around, and came up with something that might work. First, find a no-nipples morph for the P4 girl. (Did Traveller make one?) Next, alter the P4 Girl texture to where the upper half from the waist up is a TOS uniform. Next, in Poser, use the P4 miniskirt, with a little bit of taper and scale adjustments to flare the bottom, and make it the same color of the uniform part of the girl texture. Finish it off by using the Female boots, and hair of your choice. This is something I just thought of, and haven't tried. Seems like it would work (in theory, at least.) Jon
