This may be too basic for you, but have you looked at the Carrara 1 Bible by Doug Sahlin? The first tutorial creates an underwater scene using little or no ambient light and a dark blue back ground with matching color distance fog. If you need more specifics, email me and I can send you more information... ie a car file that's finished for this tutorial. Ken

The Carrara 1 Bible has a tutorial for an underwater scene right off the bat, using distance fog etc.

The bubble is a glass sphere with full transparency and refractive qualities. Inside the sphere is a flat round disk with a tif image projected onto the front and back. Should the back light be a bulb or a spot? Also, I need to do key lighting and fill lighting (the requirement for the class is to have three-point lighting in place).

If you go to egroups.com and join the Carrara Forum, you can download Patrick Martin's Tutorials (you may be able to get them somewhere else). There's an excellent Tutorial for Mag Wheels.

Looks Great! Maybe some ripples in the water esp. on top of the reflection. and/or you could put one or two moons in the upper left ie: for an alien landscape. Hope this helps!

I am currently taking a class on Cinema 4D at a community College in Berkeley, CA -- It ROCKS!! The makers of Cinema 4d (Maxon) offer about a $700 price for the educational version, it's fully registerable with no restrictions. Also, if you're taking a class in 3D, they offer an additional discount for a grand total Ed. price of $500 (this is $2400 software). Carrara is nice, but it's still pretty buggy. I'm looking forward to the future of it as well.
