Look for 'Eureka3'; that's the sitting-on-something trick I was looking for. There is a reference to 'soft bodies' in the docs, by which the author means the object to me distorted by whatever it is that is sitting on it. I tried it out last night, and it works!

Oh, God, where do I start? Since I do a lot of architectural modeling..., how do I specify the dimensions and coordinates of a primitive, or better yet, of a compound object that has to be replicated many, many times, each in a very precise, yet unique, location? (As in, for example, a collonade?)
