I have never been able to make the emitter solution work, though that's likely to be due my lack of skill with it.  I am in the habit of cutting the inner wall of the glass at the level I want my liquid and capping that mesh so it can be textured separately.  That way there is no issue from adjacent meshes interfering with each other.  Using the inner wall of the glass shortcuts the creation of a mesh for each container.
You can also get detailed and add a meniscus fairly easily with that method.
See http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=633430&user_id=55668&np&np before my Carrara days (modeled in Rhiino) but the same method.

XenoDream not only creates models (tricky to get right, limited due to the nature of many fractal forms) but it also creates high res PGM terrains. ...and is quite reasonably priced....

You're right Hoof, every 3D lover should do a chess set. This was surprisingly satisfying, thanks for the challenge Kix.There's an odd angle render of this in my gallery on the link attached.

that falcon knife certainly is a popular item. its all over the web.
"Forged with the power of ancient Egypt, this fantasy style knife features an intricately detailed cast metal handle of Horus, the god of light in Egyptian mythology, who is the symbol of the rising sun and renewed life."
"brought to you by United Cutlery" .. is nothing sacred.....

Here's a better pic of that scimitar and a few other ancient Egyptian wepons. This link: http://www.argoth.co.uk/acatalog/Egyptian_Weapons.html has some spectacular examples of ornate Egyption knives and swords. The blade design is worth copying even if the handles are impossible. I'm going to have a go at the scimitar, it looks like a cool project to try. The knives are way out of my beginer modeling league.Thread: WIP part 2, Desk Scene | Forum: Bryce
Love the scene. The ambiguous era of the setting is intruiging. Looks a bit like a 17th century time traveller has been collecting books and objects from the future. Maybe through in something small and ultra modern to push the point. I agree with Diolma that the clutter can use some real world reorganisation.
Thread: Bryce crashes my computer faster than a ornlu render on roids... | Forum: Bryce
I have seen Bryce do exactly what you describe Drac. Both the symptoms and the sudden onset after faithful service. The problem was the graphics card and it was precipitated by installation of Mojo World. Mojo World was not the culprit, merely the catalyst. New graphics hardware solved the problem instantly and the old card work fine with Bryce and Mojo World in another PC. Ensure you face east when installing the new card......

Thread: Grouper??? | Forum: Bryce
It took me several tries to get http://www.castironflamingo.com/tutorial/grouper/ to come up. At no stage could I link directly to the second URL although the download link on first URL is the same path. That link works fine. NHRN, it's 2 mb, do you want it e-mailed to you ?
