Subject: Big business? Bah humbug and Merry Christmas!!

BillyJ ( ) posted Tue, 24 December 2002 at 10:08 AM ยท edited Fri, 16 August 2024 at 1:30 PM

So many members here seem very concerned about Renderosity being a cold hard business and not caring enough about their members just because of this AOY happening, yet the big folks here have explained away and they have apologized and they are even willing to work on a solution it seems. Perhaps far too many folks here do take far too much for granted around here sometimes. I realize people have a right to complain and have opinions, but come now? Perhaps we CAN push all this way too far as well?? Me, I am fairly new here, but I like this place for all the value it DOES have, whether many of you longterm folks maybe don't often see it anymore because your here so much or like to see the worst far more than all that is good here or whatever; I really wish people could be more aware that this place is not even "nearly" so bad as "some" folks like to make them out to be so often. Let me give you an example of what a REAL big business can be like...just one small example!! Where I am, the Scrooge award would very most certainly have to go to the GAS companies, who decided to give us the honorable gift at Christmas time of deliberatly hiking gas prices up by eleven cents a litre just in time to collect more in their coffers for holiday time!! In fact, gas prices went up higher today than they have ever been!! Now, how does that grab you?? This place? A big "mean" business?? My ass!! For the business part this place does represent, many of you members don't know how good you have it. This forum don't even compare to some of the business nightmares you can cherish in our real world, nevermind some very cold, crude practices that DO exist online as well. Just a holiday thought. Merry Christmas to everyone, and a BIG THANK YOU to everyone for creating so much beautiful art here for me to view and be delighted by, time and time again.

"Me, I am fairly new here..." Not to sound like I am lecturing or preaching, but this may be part of the problem. Being new, you have not been exposed to this happening on a recurring basis. Therefore, you see people lambasting R'osity for one incident, whereas those with more tenure on the site are seeing it from a recurring perspective. If people did not care, they would not voice their opinions - positive, negative, or indifferent. I understand you are trying to relieve some of the pressure of the current situation, but the community will work this through just like any other occurrence before.

Thank you for your reply. I may be new here, but I am not new to driving and I absolutely detest having to pay more for gas at Christmas. I suppose I would be really upset if the forum folk were to change this all into a pay site right at Christmas, yes, that would really upset me. Happy Holiday

yep - that's why I gas up a week in advance (I usually take two weeks to burn a tank of gas in my Jeep Wrangl., since I don't drive all that much; kind of a side benefit of having a 20-gallon gas tank. (haven't the slightest idea how many liters that comes to... I'd assume it would be a big number.) Renderosity would never become a pay site, mainly because everyone (and I mean literally everyone) would pack up and leave all at once. Also, I can guarantee that Free Stuff would dry up instantly - the freebie contributors pay for their own bandwidth, and would prolly be more than a little miffed at having to pay even more cash beyond the bandwidth bills for the 'privilege' of posting their freebies here. Renderosity makes their money from sales in the Marketplace (40-50% cut of all sales), and through banner ads paid for from outside parties. They gain potential customers through three big, fat draws: Galleries, Free Stuff, and the Forums, in that order. The nanosecond they tamper with that, they'd lose the biggest incentive(s) for folks to stop by. Now if a site like Renderotica were to charge a modest amount of money for, say, gallery access (unless they actually contribute to it and become exempt), folks would likely pay up. ;) /P

Hey Peng. I have a Wrangler too. 93' Wanna hit the mud Bogs? 8-) Sounds like you just needed to blow off some steam Billy. Lord knows I've got quite a list going myself. Life sucks. Then you die. So kick up your heels. And have a gobblet of Grog on me. 8-)

I'd love to, but all we got out here are mountains, and big ones at that. (I have a '91 - nothing really modified, just a 4" body lift and some bigger tires, but otherwise pretty much stock. I also have the great fortune of living within 3 hours' drive of Moab :) )

Merry Christmas, Scott :)

/P

No steam ScottA, just a little curious fume as to why so many folks seem as if they cannot see much right in this place. Sometimes people here remind me of some extremely nagging wife you see on television sitcoms that babble on so fast you cannot even understand what they say. Yet these same nagging wives, most of them can create such wonders with so much passion and hang them in these galleries for me to enjoy. Yes ScottA, life can suck I suppose. Then you die. Then you return reincarnated as the next forum big wheel and realize all this is not as easy to look after as you thought, nevermind with the utter perfection so many seem to imagine. Kick up my heels? They are kicking alright, better that than pay for the high price of gas to drive my car. I think I will invest in a sleigh or hitch a ride with Santa if he does not charge me. Better to sniff reindeer dung than smell the high price of gas on Christmas eve just so some big fat oil boy can pay for his Christmas time hooker treats. Penguinisto, I kind of figured all that out already, but I do appreciate you filling me in. I was merely suggesting how horrible things might actually be if this place was run by an oil kingpin or similar. Perhaps I should have specified a gallery entrance fee right before Christmas instead of a pay site, which would also make me very upset since I do enjoy looking at all the art here for free. Thanks for that. Happy Holidays
