Subject: What's up with the attitude?!

Penguinisto ( ) posted Sat, 28 December 2002 at 9:39 AM

Dodger - I like that idea! If it doesn't get used here at R'osity, perhaps you can convince folks at other sites (PoserPros, 3DC, etc)... /P

When my daughter learned to walk, I cheered her on. When she drew crayon pictures of stick figures and told me they were her and me, I cheered her on. When she learned to play simple melodies on the piano, I cheered her on. I never told her she sucked, even though I could walk/run far faster than her, even though I could draw far more lifelike figures than her, even though I can play circles around her on the piano. I have sometimes made suggestions in as positive a fashion as I could, but I know she has to learn some things at her own rate and in her own way. I try to apply that form of behavior here when dealing with others here. Guess what? No one else has to behave the way I do. I sometimes wish they would but I'm not God and my opinions are no more or less valid than anyone else's. And I'm sure as hell not better than anyone else here. A lot of what I see here isn't exciting to me. Sometimes it's because I've seen it before. Sometimes it just doesn't meet my standards or preferences. I do acknowledge, however, that for the one who did it, it may be their crowning achievement. And I can't read their minds and tell why they did something. Humans are quite complex and rarely do things for just one reason. I remember what it was like learning all the stuff about art that I've learned - and I'm still no master. I can't fault someone for not having my skills or meeting my standards. I am not God and my opinions aren't any more valid than anyone else's. They are also no less valid than anyone else's. I also accept that the owners of the site have the right to run it their way - whether I like it or not. I might make suggestions or recommendations but it's their site and I accept that as owners they have the same rights as I would if I owned it. I definately have not agreed with some of the things I've seen done here. But, it's their site. That acceptance provides me with peace of mind. I'm here at their site by my choice, because I want to be here. If I decide I don't want to stop by, I won't. There are plenty of web sites I don't go to and it's nothing personal - I'm just not interested in what they have to offer. So far, what Renderosity has to offer outweighs the things I've not been pleased with. BTW, _dodger, I like your gallery idea. I might bump up the numbers a bit though; I'd hate to only be able to see 20 of Doc Legume's images. FWIW, this wasn't intended as a rant. It was more a personal "manifesto."

I can guarantee that at least one other site will use it.

That gallery idea is interesting. Mind if I mention it to the PTB? And trust me - if you had to look at thousands of naked Vikkies every week- you'd think it was a good idea too :P

No worries, though I think it has already been mentioned. One ofthe other things I see wrong with this gallery system here is that it's not relational. I don;t think a pic should 'go in a gallery' really; this isn't a file cabinet, it's a database. Instead, each image uploaded should have chequeboxes or a multiselect for each type of criterion it fits, and the galleries should be made as filters for the whole thing. For instance, when I upload a pic, rather than selecting the gallery from a dropdown, I would prefer to be presented with a multiselect with nt only the 'galleries' that exist, but also things like 'Postwork' and 'Photoshop' and 'NVIT' even, sort of like we have the Violence and Nudity chequeboxes. This way not only could you show all the Postwork pics, you cuold also make a gallery of Poser Without Postwork which includes all the Poser gallery thing UNLESS they have Postwork chequed. Likewise, rather than setting a preference for whether or not you want to see boobs, you could simply go into the 'Poser (all ages)' gallery or something rather than resetting your preferences each time you change your mind.

That's a good idea! Rather than separated galleries, one big ballery... you then can search and select from a checklist things you want to see. This checklist could include themes, or "Product Showcase", or programs used, and maturity level, etc.

This idea also accomodates the fact that so many images use multiple software apps in their development. Bobasaur - still waiting for that Animation Gallery

Man, where do you get off? You've been trolling my art from day one and I have never done anything to you other than critisize your motives on that "Hot Vicky and Steffy Lesbo Action" image, which wasn't even an image! As for my art, I do what I like to do, and don't give a rats ass what you think. Art is something that one enjoys experiencing. Certain people enjoy certain things. Its as simple as that. I enjoy my art, and you hate it. I don't enjoy your art, and you think you are an intelligent satirist. You think I do my particular subjects to be popular, and I know I do my subject because thats what I find enjoyable. Get off your high horse and live in the real world. Art for art's sake is lamer than those of us who do it for fun, so shut up and go learn how to have fun. Don't try to make every image a "message" that only you get. Sit your butt down and do something from your heart that has nothing to do with anyone else...Do something you want to see. Do something you'll enjoy looking at, and don't worry about the political or artistic merits of it. Only then will you be a true artist. Maybe then you'll find life to be enjoyable. Ok, my rant is done for now. I never usually write on these boards, but this really irritated me. Karl www.Poserchikz.com

Hmm. When it comes right down to it, 'art' or not in the real world is determined by how cool the result is. Artists or artistes can make up all the bullshit definitions they want, but the societal definition requires the work to be 'cool' whether I like it, or you like it, or the creator him/herself likes it or not. This is why Patrick Nagel, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Roy Lichtenstein, and Vincent Van Gogh will be remembered alongside Leonardo DaVinci, Rembrandt, and Michaelangelo regardless of which of them I like (Lichtenstein, Warhol, Nagel) and which I think are crap (Van Gogh, Picasso). Fantasy art is inherently not cool because it's geeky, thus it hasn't been accepted as real art except among the geeks -- until recently, when the concept of 'Geek Chic' has begun to exist. Among When it comes down to it, whether anyone likes it or not, no matter how many bullshit arguments the artistes and poseurs make to the contrary, art is fashion for your walls.

As far as we can tell from the evidence, as long as there have been Homo sapiens there has been Art, Music, Storytelling (including Poetry), and Dance. All forms of entertainment for those who can't do them, all ways of passing time for those who can; all still exist in one form or another. As soon as these forms of what we refer to collectively as the Arts were begun, the first critics were born. The first criticisms probably took the form of throwing rocks at the artists, musicians, storytellers and dancers ("Og no like! Make it stop!"); I'm afraid some critics still haven't advanced very much beyond that. :^) If you make art and share it with others, you're open to criticism. If you're an artist, and are a little overcritical of the work of others, you might want to rethink this attitude. You have better ways of expressing yourself through your own art.(Money where your mouth is, and all that). Life is too short to waste in non-constructive ways, when you have the gift to create. Just be ready to dodge when the rocks start coming your way. :^)

This is not my "second childhood". I'm not finished with the first one yet.
