Subject: Poser 5: Need advise and help!!

I have sent this to CL, but thought I would post here as well, as many of you are likely using P5. Just got Poser 5....had been playing with the P4 Pro Pack demo which was great! Installed Poser 5 and immediately downloaded the figure updater and the SR2.1 updater (my version number on the original install was v5.0.0.229). I start it up. I select a figure.....wait....wait...wait some more!! I go to a pose.....wait.....wait.....wait some more! No matter what I select, I get the hour glass and have to sit and wait.....probably about 3 minutes or more for each thing. Does anyone know how can I speed this thing up! Is this stuff compressed to save space? I have a large harddrive.....I need quick.... not slow as molasses in January! By the size change on the drive it would appear that it must be compressed. I did the default full install. Here are my computer specs: Windows XP Pro, 1.7 G 4 CPU Intel Pentium Processor, 512 mb ram, Intellimouse Explorer USB, Maxtor 30GB hd, HP 960e USB printer, HP cd reader/writer 8200 USB, Liteon CD Drive, Standard Keyboard, Video Card is NVIDIA GeForce 2MX 100/200, Visioneer 87x/89X USB Scanner, Intel Pro/100 VE Network Connection (DSL), ADI Monitor, Integrated Sound These specs more than meet CL's requirements. I have nothing on this computer that runs this slow. I am use to fast....very fast! I will never use this......I am very disappointed I must say. $319 later....my fast little demo is gone and I am left with this slow sucker. If anyone has any ideas on how to speed this up save messing with the OS, I would appreciate hearing it. I have no custom content installed. I have purchased a number of DAZ and DNA items. I'm sick about it!!! I will never get to use them on this slow thing!

P5 is slower then 4...no doubt about it. Let's start here :) Make sure your temp files are all cleaned up. defrag the hard drive...you should do this prior to install, but now if you haven't done it. I have a 1.53g AMD...P5 is slow, but not as unbearable as you state...

Ok.....I'm breathing easier now :) The defrag and cleanup was done....I do a cleanup once a week and a defrag about every two weeks. I went back in after posting, determined to fix it or kill it! What I discovered is that the hourglass thing can be eliminated my simply "clicking" on the image. It's sort of a nusiance (must be a thing with the mouse...hopefully they'll get that on their next patch!). After a bit of playing, I can get this thing to run nearly as fast as the little demo I'd become so use to :) I can load Judy and Don(think that's their names), cloth them, put dynamic hair on them, render them and then load and render a cat in under 5 minutes.....that works for me!:) I think before I do much of anything, I'm going to spend some time reading the book! This is a whole different animal than that P4ProPack demo! :) Thanks for your patience Dave-So......you could obviously hear the "panic" in my typing!! :)

I can understand what you're going through. I just got P5 for xmas myself. It is so different but totally kool. Once I got my serial number in properly (due to my glitch) it works beautiful. It is kool to help each other through the process. Good luck.

I broke down and bought a p42.8g with 400ddr mem of 1gig (along with all other ddr that I dont understand) and was very frustrated to find that my laptop 98 loaded it faster than my xp pro..... as a remote terminal no less! Then somewhere along the chains of searching here, I found that if I shut off the WindowsXP pretty stuff and viewed classic (display settings) - Poser jumped up and worked a lot faster. Still not a great pickup for my expenditure but now I have a fast mobo, mem, himem vid card (went ATI as saw 2 many complaints on nvideo) and lots of harddisk to totally commit to my 3d.... Hopefully, next upgrade will... aw well, nothing is ever fast enough and I started using computers back when there was no PC! Hope you enjoy your experience - P5 has been "quite" the interesting learning environment and I am just barely touching on the clothes now as materials and faces took me so long to feel comfortable with. Good Luck!

good point on turning off the XP stuff...I forgot about that..but its something I did as well, and Poser 5 clicks along way faster by doing that.

Not an option for me guys! :) I never mess with my OS settings. I've been running XP Pro for about a year and a half. It's "rebooted" (XP version of "blue screen")twice during that time and then only because I hadn't defraged regularly enough. I like my desktop "eyecandy" I'm afraid :) If the software can't work with my OS.....the software goes :) But....that's just me!! I'm sure that by adjusting control panel settings to "maximize for performance" would speed it up....but I've heard others say it didn't make any differnce at all...who knows. Actually Poser is working great now that I figured out how to eliminate the hourglass problem. I've created a new library of the content I purchased and have loaded each item.....works great. Even all those "hi-res" textures apply without a hitch....and selecting a new texture in the material room is not a problem. The face room is a hoot! I really like that a lot! The expressions you can create are amazing! The rendering of a scene does not take much longer than the propack demo and it looks like you have the option of using the firefly renderer or the Poser 4 rendering engine (useful I guess for older files that use .bums...or so it says in the help file). Actually, I'm pretty pleased with it now that I've calmed down and given it all a closer look! The .pz3 files are really huge though! Even using the .pzz compressed setting doesn't seem to help that much. Oh well....that's what cdr's are for I guess!
