Subject: Can I do this?

looksgood ( ) posted Wed, 08 January 2003 at 9:05 PM · edited Sat, 02 November 2024 at 7:17 PM

Can I put a 3d studio and a bryce modle into poser 4 pro? I need to make a starship in poser and all the ships are made in bryce or 3dstudio. If I can do it please tell me how.

You can convert most 3ds models to OBJ format using plugins. Bryce terrains can be exported in OBJ format, but I don't know the procedure.

what plugins?

Marque ( ) posted Wed, 08 January 2003 at 9:22 PM

If it has the extension .3ds just pull it in. Your manual will tell you about this. If it's a 3D studio max file you can get the plugin at www.curiouslabs.com Marque

I can't find the plug in, what is it called?

www.curiouslabs.com look in DOWNLOADS then POSER 4 AND PRO PACK then scrol down to 3DStudio Max Plugin

I'm pretty sure that CL PPP 3DStudio Max Plugin is only for importing PZ3 files into Max. If you want Max models in PPP, save out of Max in 3DS format, then Use 'File/Import' to bring it into PPP. Whatever you make in Bryce, using primatives, can't be exported from Bryce.

The 3DS Max plugin to export Wavefront OBJects is called Max2Obj and is made by HABware. I don't have the URL handy but a google search will turn it up with 'HABware Wavefront 3DSMax'.

Oh, and it's free.

And in Bryce, only terrains can be exported, not booleans. Select item, click for the edit screen. With edit screen up hit CTRL-D. Save format.

You can import a 3DS model into Poser. I've done it numerous times. The only problem is that I don't think you can map it unless it's OBJ. Under File>Import, you'll find various formats. Select 3DS and it'll just bring it right in. But as I said, you might have a problem with texturing it in Poser, so you might have to use a format conversion program to convert it to an OBJ, then run it through UVMapper. Melanie

Actually, I'm only assuming ProPack will do that. I only have regular Poser 4, so I'm not sure about PPP. Melanie

melanie: you can map it in in 3DSMax and the UVW co-cordinates will remain intact when you import it. However, I recommend exporting in Wavefrnot OBJect form over .3DS format becauser you will have better control over what it's doing. However, in a pinch, there's no reason yuo can't import it from .3DS, scale it, and export it as .OBJ, open it in UVMapper and UVW map it, and then re-import it from OBJ. Sometimes this will even fix up some of those annoying degenerate facets that shrinking things down from 3DSM size is prone to causing.

Are these premade models? If they are Bryce obp and were made with Bryce primitives they cannot be exported from Bryce. But if they are imported mesh models no problem. And for .3DS files you can convert to .OBJ with Bryce (4 and 5, 5 more stable). Just import the .3ds model then click the 'E' to get the smoothing editor up. CTRL-D from there and choose wavefront object and save it. (That's the way to export mesh models from Bryce.) I use Bryce as a format converter...don't need anything else to do it. Once it's in .obj format, just load into UVMapper, create a UVMap and save the model and the map/template. Map is now ready to paint for a texture for Poser.
