Im search for a Poser 5 Reflection Tutorial

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2003 at 5:11 PM

The short version:

  1. Go into the Material Room.
  2. Select the material you want to make reflective.
  3. Create a Reflect node (right-click, New Node --> Lighting --> Ray Trace --> Reflect)
  4. Plug it into the material's Diffuse_Color, Alternate_Diffuse, or Reflection_Color channel (your choice, depending upon the effect you wish to achieve).
  5. Enable raytracing in your Firefly render options.
  6. Render.

Other than providing illustrations, there isn't much else to contribute. That's the basic process, as described above. Everything else is just tweaking the material settings to get exactly the look you want.

I'm really new at all this but saw your tut & tried. I have two questions. Why doesn't the reflection have hair? I created a rectangular box & imported it as an object for the mirror surface. Why is the reflection distorted? Any help would be greatly appreciated-- Thanx

GraphicFoxx ( ) posted Mon, 03 March 2003 at 7:45 PM

hodad, do you have smooth polygons checked? That's most likely your issue with the distortion. P5 is ballooning your box. As for the no hair, I'm not sure on that one.

antovasa: I'm not sure. Did you set up the mirror material's Reflect node as shown in my illustration? Do you have raytracing enabled in your render options? Are you viewing the mirror at the proper angle to see your character's reflection? hodad66: I agree with GraphicFoxx about the polygon-smoothing. You can disable it for individual props, if you want to leave that feature on. As for the hair, every object or element in a scene has a Properties panel option called "Visible in raytracing". If this option is unchecked, the object won't appear in a raytraced reflection. I understand that some of the dynamic hair props included in P5 have this option disabled, so you'll have to switch it on.

Hey thanks for the info. I tried saving the rectangle in a different format, the first one was 3D studio & I guess had no UV mapping. This one uses a Wavefront, obj. The hair probably wasn't visible, I'll check. I've had P5 for 3 days & it's all Greek to me! Thanks again. J

OK, in P5, in the material room, it shows a preview swatch below all the settings. This is showing a convex shape just like the ones in the library. Is that the distortion I'm getting & if so, how can I get rid of it? Also, once I get this ironed out, how can I save this object as a mirror for future use or the specular settings to plug in?

GraphicFoxx ( ) posted Tue, 04 March 2003 at 4:17 PM

Can you post a screenshot of your material room? Also your render settings. Again, make sure 'smooth polygons' is not checked. To save it for future use, open up your props library, and either in there or a subfolder, click on the little plus sign at the bottom of the library. It says add to library...name it, and it's saved. Same method for saving the material room settings, only you save it in the material library. That way you can also apply it to other objects.

No, the "preview swatch" intentionally has a spherical distortion; I assume it's so you can better see the effects of lighting and shading on a material. trueSpace does something similar, but at least it lets you switch between flat and spherical previews.
