It seems to go in waves. A lot depends on how playful the recent offerings at DAZ have been. Making "Cute" renders has never been my cup of tea, but a lot of them are too fun to dismiss. ..And it's all about fun, really. Message671414.jpg

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 9:43 PM

Maclean, I have to agree with you about this. When cuteness goes all the way into deformity, it is just too much. :blech: There is a middle ground between horror/goth/grit and heart-tugging-toysiness, but it has been shrinking under the encroachment. There are days when I bless the sanity of a solid dining table from SAMS or other icon of comfort and familiarity. BTW, it isn't a sexist thing. I've known grown men who talked to their teddy bears. With war imminent, we may see more retreat into sugarplumland. Carolly

Crescent ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 9:54 PM

I'll take cute over watermelons any day. (If you need that explained, you aren't old enough to view the pictures.) ;-}~

dialyn ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 9:56 PM

Count me in on that one, Crescent. What's the harm in a little lightening of spirits? A little playfulness on the forum? There's so much sadness and fear in the world today...probably people just need some escapism.

Patricia ( ) posted Thu, 13 March 2003 at 10:04 PM

These days, anything that makes me laugh, takes me away for a minute from the nightmare of war shaping up on the nightly news, anything at all that reminds me to keep the child in me alive is a blessing. I may not do 'cute' but I love to click on a thread that I know will lighten my spirits, and I'm thankful that other people can do 'cute.'

I'm not totally against "cute", exactly, but I think it can go too far. I for one find the Koshini character, somewhat repulsive. I don't know why I can't see it as "cute", to me,it's almost grotesque. Too "cute", I guess. On the other hand, I find the DAZ house-mouse "cute". I even enjoyed both Stuart Little flicks. I thought they were "cute". I like both the toon cat and pup from DAZ, even the toon-a-fish. I guess "cute" like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

PapaBlueMarlin ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 2:53 AM

Personally, I'm not into the cuteness at all. But at the same time, I'm really not into fantasy stuff either. The cuteness may be receiving a lot of attention, but if it's not something which interests you, there are plenty of other avenues being explored by other members of the community: ie- real life, pin-ups, comic book, sci-fi, and my favorite which is noir.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 4:40 AM

I guess I have cute "periods" when I like to do cute things. And trash periods where I do trash pics. It all comes down to the mood I'm in. To me, cute = happyness. So a shrink would find interesting things in my gallery, I s'pose L I can't help liking Koshini. She's cute in that anime way. I am a 37 year old woman who LOVES Pokon............ ok there. I said it. Not normally into anime but Pokon opened my eye to that WAY of making people. Not that Pokon are typical anime. But well... The EYES.. I love those anime EYES :o) I sometimes do pin up pics, mostly with little luck coz I always forget to make the boobs BIIIIG ;o) and my fantasy attempts are so bad that I won't show them in public. But I make those as well. It'l like my music. I make many VERY different kinds of music, depending on my current mood. So what is all thos rambling about? I guess all I want to say is: We're different. If you don't like faeries (I don't in general) Then don't spend time making them and avoid faerie galleries. If you don't like cute, avoid posts starting with "cute alert" ;o) Make pics that YOU Like not what other people may want. (at least if you're doing this as a hobby)

I prefer melons to mice but I suppose in a world where Mr. Rogers is gone and we're left with Dubya, Sadam, Osama and Tony, we need all the fluff we can get.

dialyn ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 7:49 AM

We're not all melon lovers. One person's fantasy is another person's cliche. I find the cute creators are doing imaginative and fun graphics. To my unappreciative eyes, most of the melon lovers tend to produce the same produce over and over again. But it's okay. I avoid the melons. And the choice to avoid the cute is there too. Surely there's enough room on the galleries and forums for both.

Attached Link: NOT CUTE

Cuteness is easier and requires less work my five year old daughter does many Cute drawings but frankly she cranks them out very quickly due to her lack of experience and underdeveloped compositonal skills as a character animator this debate often comes up in my circles Toy story VS Final fantasy its much harder to do realistic characters because every aspect of them is scrutinized more deeply than the "cutesy" stuff. Im not interested in Cute.

I dunno, both the melon and the cute pics are examples of deformation on art....so what! It's art and by its very nature there are no rules. Or, if there are rules then they're there to be broken. We've got enough people in the world telling us what to think, how to think, what to wear, whatever, do we really need another set of rules? Mon, he say No! exit computer right to render anekkidchickinnatemple

dialyn ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 10:41 AM

I don't think there are any five year olds who could produce the graphics that pokeydots, lululee, Gary Price, Sams3D and others are doing. They are combining the "cute" figures in a way that show their abilities as graphic artists no matter what the subject is. I don't think they deserve to be dismissed so lightly just because they aren't creating graphics to your tastes.

bijouchat ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 11:03 AM

wolf359 wrote "but frankly she cranks them out very quickly due to her lack of experience and underdeveloped compositonal skills" in a nutshell... in one sentence, you've described a vast collection of images in the Poser gallery... both cute and photoreal... lol. actually, anime cute isn't all that easy. Composition rules and figure drawing and modeling skills are pretty similar for anime and realistic figures. Its easier to do anime than photoreal, I'll grant you that. But easy enough for a 5 year old to make Koshini in Lightwave... no NO no. That's not a fair comparison. I have respect for anyone that can model and bone their own Poser figure, whether its anime or photoreal. Those are hard won skills, and I KNOW that the skill involved in creating Koshini is WAY higher than the skill involved in click and rendering a brand new Victoria photorealistic texture bought in the marketplace here. Heck the amount of time I spent on making a simple Minoan jug this week, then uvmapping it, then applying a realistic texture, then setting up shaders in Poser and Carrara... I could have cranked out 80 click and render VERY photorealistic Poser images with Daz figures and excellent textures I bought in the marketplace! lol... I don't doubt for one second that Lady Littlefox could go on and create a photorealistic Poser figure if she wanted to. Though Koshini isn't my style of figure to render, I think the figure is cute and I can see that there was a LOT of hard work involved in creating her. nothing against photoreal... I love photoreal and I prefer it as a style. But I do realise that its just a style.

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 3:07 PM

Well, well. Thanks for all the interesting replies, and especially the great images. Where do I start...? First of all, just to set the record straight, I wasn't really grumbling about cute. It's not my thing, but I certainly wouldn't want to ban it or bad-mouth it. As someone pointed out, it's easy to avoid the 'cute alerts' on posts. I actually think it's a healthy sign in a way, and no doubt, partly powered by DAZ and their offerings. I love sci-fi, but if I never see another spaceship in a poser render, it'll be too soon. And I won't even mention vicki and temples in the same sentence. Oops... I did it. LOL. Secondly, although I'm not a 'cute' person, some of my favorite books include my very old and battered copies of (all) the Winnie-the-pooh books, by AA Milne, Wind in the Willows, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking-glass, The Little Prince, and others that I can't recall at the moment. I guess these would all fall under the 'cute' banner, apart from being great reading. I, personally, don't make renders in poser. I'm a fashion photographer, so that's a good enough outlet for whatever creativity I can manage to dig up. I spend my time making models for poser, but if I had to make renders, I'd probably like to try something very stylized, like cell-shading or maybe a poser version of black & white portraiture. And probably female-oriented, because that's just me. Adoration of the female form and all that crap. Well, it's good to get a discussion going and get a few points of view. There's room for everyone here. So long live cuteness for now. Until the next new fad comes alomg anyway. Heh, heh... mac

Here's a couple of pics from a shoot I did last month. Can I join the 'cute' brigade or am I a hopeless case? mac

Eric Walters ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 5:08 PM

Absolutely ADORABLE Mac! And GREAT renders too! Why- she looks very much like a real person in a photo! And WHERE IS the temple?? I guess you are using Hyperenderosity with a 10 gigapoly model and those new 10 gigabyte hi-res textures shipping with DazStudio V6. Is that the Vicky 9 character? It would take me hours to render that on my old 50 Gigahertz Mac G6! :-) Definetely cuter than my Friendly dragon on da beach with V3. But at least there are NO temples.... I bet your animation is more lifelike too! Eric :-)

Patricia ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 5:11 PM

LOL Eric....! Maclean, those are beautiful photos....I think your 'cuteness' credentials are in fine order ;)

dialyn ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 5:17 PM

I don't know about cute. Borderline kinky, possibly (you have to remember...there are too many instances of young girls being kidnapped in my area of the world--I find this kind of photograph disturbing for reasons no doubt unrelated to your intent). I think I'll stick to my kittens and puppies...much cuter and they don't lead me to nightmares.

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 5:50 PM

LOL@eric. And, thanks, patricia. Dialyn, A little explanation. These were taken for a magazine I work for every month. A teenagers magazine with a target of 14-18 year-olds. I'm not particularly into young models, but the magazine insists on a certain age group, ie. the age of their readers. Actually, most of the shoots we do for them are more like normal fashion, but this one was done for February, which is 'Carnival' month in italy. So we did a very stylized look for the shoot. The other looks were Barbie doll, ballet dancer, etc. So, I understand what you're saying. I don't approve of 'borderline kinky' either. And I know exactly what you mean. Too many pictures portray young girls in 'suggestive' outfits or poses, and it's just a flimsy excuse for dubious porn. I ain't doin' that. Just doing my job. mac

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 5:53 PM

PS As a matter of fact, just looking at the pictures again, it's the first time it ever occurred to me that they could be seen that way. If you hadn't mentioned it, I would never have seen it. I just see them as fashion pics. Here today, gone tomorrow. mac

dialyn ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 6:03 PM

I know...I'm not suggesting that's what you had in mind. We just had another young girl taken at gunpoint this morning, and seeing adult women dressed as children creeped me out. It has nothing to do with you or your pictures. It has to do with what is going on in my world. I had the same reaction to another thread involving guns. Sometimes the real world sneaks into my virtual entertainment.

maclean ( ) posted Fri, 14 March 2003 at 6:51 PM

I know what you mean, dialyn. I live in italy where a lot of girls from Eastern Europe end up as kidnapped prostitutes. Young girls who are either kidnapped from school or forced to go because their families are threatened by Albanian/Russian mafia thugs. I also see a lot of young models here. Mostly, they come with a parent, but sometimes there are girls of 15 and 16 on their own. I sometimes wonder how they end up. mac
