I've started a webcomic that is made using Poser, and I would love any feedback or pointers that any of you could give.

http://www.onlychildclub.com/Lysander/TheSkewedView/

I am taking pictures with my digital camera, importing them as background images in Poser, and then doing my best to pose the characters so that it looks like they are interacting with the objects in the background image.

The speech bubbles are added in PSP, and in the second comic the tabletop was added as a new layer in PSP so that it would be in front of the characters.

Everything else is done in Poser 5.

I know actually using 3D Models for the furniture would work better but I only have Poser and PSP to work with and I am a college student with no money to buy anything at the moment... so I am working with what I have.

Anyway, let me know what you think.

I like the idea of posing poser people in real life environment. But your people are too small compared to the chairs they're sitting in. However you've done a good job matching the lights so you're on the right track for sure. You are aware of the Free Stuff section here, right? Loads of furniture and more for free :o)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

The sketch with the two men at the table is a bit static. They should move their position from frame to frame. I like the one with the people on the park bench. I also viewed your photos and the sketch. You seem to have artistic abilities, Lysander. You should go on making images.

This is a great concept. I would suggest you vary the poses in the first four panels. By "moving" your people as they engage in conversation, it will be more interesting to look at the panels.

Is one of the characters an image of you you did in Poser 5?

As people have already mentioned, there are freebies around here and at 3D Commune, and other places. Just keep alert and you can find amazing items that people are giving away (which is something I'm eternally grateful for). Also, some 3D modelers (Wings is one example) are FREE. Doesn't get better than that. Other 3D Modelers have free trials, or free earlier versions, which can do a lot even if you don't have the funds to buy until you become a rich artist (don't know how many of those are around, but I'm assuming some). I can't improve on the comments above, but I like the comic and your sense of humor. Hope you post when you have further adventures. :)

Okay, I'll try to reply to all of your comments.

  1. I didn't know about the free stuff, thank you very much for telling me. You will see some of it in upcoming comics. =P

  2. It is a bit static, but I didn't want to overdo it and make it look silly. I mean, how much do you really reposition yourself during a one or two minute conversation? I will try to move them around a bit more in the future, though, and try to find a good middle ground.

  3. One of the characters is sort of an image of me. Nathaniel (the one with long hair and facial hair which I still can't quite get right) is supposed to be my lost twin (the one that was never born) so he looks as close to me as I could make him. When I showed the comic to my Mom the only criticism she had was that his hairline was too far back... so I guess it is a pretty close resemblance.

  4. I will look into some of the free 3D modelers. I have download Vue d'Esprit and used up its trial period (I made one of the art pieces on my webpage with this free trial).

Thank you all for your comments and advice

Ahh, so that face studio in P5 works pretty well? I believe that Avatar Lab lets you create this as well doesn't it? Hummm...perhaps I will get P5 after all. Just have to play with Avatar a little and see how it comes out.
