Subject: v7 brushes compatible in older versions?

SPIRESMEDIA ( ) posted Sat, 14 June 2003 at 2:44 PM · edited Fri, 26 July 2024 at 12:41 AM

hi, all...i was wondering if i create brushes in version 7, will they be usable in older versions of photoshop? i am a new photoshop user since i purchased version 7, so i don't have any older versions to test my brush set. thanks for any information! tam ;o)

Some might be, but only simple ones, not the ones with lots of dynamics or randomness(anything a pre-7 version doesn't have). I think I might still have 6 lying around somewhere... I could test it for you if I find it.

SPIRESMEDIA ( ) posted Sat, 14 June 2003 at 5:04 PM

yes, these are just simple brushes...i didn't even think to add dynamics (may do that in a v7 only set)...if you find your v6, send me an instant message and i'd be happy to have you test my brushes ;o) tam ;o)

Be back home tomorrow evening(around 2100 server time). I'll check then.

super! thanks so much for your help! ;o)

Mizzthang, I also run 6 and 7 (mostly for the exact reason you've mentioned). I have 7 at the office and run 6 from home (can't justify the upgrade cost from the "house" budget while the renovations are ongoing...). Since i live 3miles from the office, i do alot of ver7 specific work after hours (the owners actually encourage it as it increases my skill set). If you want an additional tester, fire it off to:
retrocity@renderosity.com
i'd be glad to try them out. I'm looking to add custom brushes to the "free stuff" segment from members that want to offer them to others.

Loaded the brushes "no problem" in 7 at the office.

I tossed this abstract texture together using your brushes to give you an idea...

BTW, nice set of brushes you have (blushes)

3 miles in 5 minutes? Isn't that illegal?

retrocity ( ) posted Sun, 15 June 2003 at 10:45 PM

LOL

No i went there eariler to make sure there wasn't a prob with the brush set...

But i did rack up quite a few "yellow slips" while working in NY. I live in PA and would drive 60ml each way for work and often found my speed was in direct proporation to the volume and beat of the music i was listening to ;)

Since much of it was industrial, i found myself "seeing lights" a whole lot. Luckly for me, NY only wanted my money, so after paying the fines, that was it, no notifying PA of the violations so there were no "points" added against my license...

awwwwwww, shucks @ not working in v6 :o(((( what a bummer! i guess i'll just have to make v7 only brushes, unless i can figure out a way to make them compatible in older versions....guess i'll be doing some research ;o) thanks so much for your speedy test....i love that abstract, by the way....i'll be offering the sampler set of brushes that i sent you as a freebie...i'll upload it later today to 'rosity freestuff ;o) tam ;o)

SPIRESMEDIA ( ) posted Mon, 16 June 2003 at 8:01 PM

well, i was going to upload that set of brushes to my 'rosity homepage, but i guess that isn't a free service anymore....since i don't have hosting, anyone interested in receiving these brushes can just post a message to this thread and i'll email them to you ;o) retro, hope you don't mind, but i chopped up your abstract above to make a little thumbnail...may i use it to post to other boards?

retrocity ( ) posted Mon, 16 June 2003 at 10:26 PM

Sure!

I was just trying an experiment to get them to work in ver6 when i got your ebot...

i'll let you know how it comes out.

Attached Link: Ad for Commercial Brushes

i hope it's okay to post this message in this forum, but just wanted to let those interested in my brushes know that the commercial package of my v7 brushes is now available...click the link above to view the product details. those interested in the free 6 brush sampler set, please send me an instant message and i will email them to you. ;o) retro, how did your v6 experiment turn out? i think i have a way to make brushes that will work with earlier versions, but i'm still working it out. ;o) tam ;o)

retrocity ( ) posted Fri, 20 June 2003 at 12:04 PM

Hi Tam, if you recreate the brushes in ver6, they open in ver7, BUT they have no dynamics at all. This basically creates tip shapes.

Adobe revamped the brush engine in ver7 so the brushes can't be backwards-compatible (even if you turn off the dynamic settings).

Best thing to do is find a system running ver6 and create brushes that don't need to take advantage of dynamics, and create brushes that need dynamic settings (leaves, grass, hair...) in ver7.

:)

ps. cool brushes ;)

SPIRESMEDIA ( ) posted Sat, 21 June 2003 at 11:03 AM

well, since i don't have v6, i guess i'll have to be a v7 only brush creator :o(( i was able to make the same brushes in v5LE, but they have no icons, although the icons show up in v7....i can't really see any way around that, so i'll stick to v7 brushes...hopefully, there are enough v7 users out there to make my endeavor worthwhile ;o) thanks so much for all your help!!! tam ;o)
