It's been proposed but the argument is that if a troll or flamer posted a nasty remark, they could go back and edit it out and look innocent if a complaint was made. You can, of course, delete the post but I believe (I could be wrong) that the system still keeps a copy of the message. You can preview the post before posting, of course. I end up in the embarressing position of deleting my last post and reposting (sometimes more than once) because I notice how often I make errors. Which means little ebots run out and tell everyone in the thread I've posted multiple times. Sigh. For one of the many forum threads on this, I've provided a link with the official explanation. Thanks for the explanation Dialyn, I don't think it's a good reason though. This is the only forum site I visit where you can't edit your posts. It can cause as many problems as it prevents. I've posted replies and then realised my post could be taken the wrong way and cause offence, not to mention the hundreds of typos I've missed when previewing lol! Ah well, I don't suppose it's gonna happen :o(
It does make me wonder about one thing...if it is true that deleted messages are retained on the system, it seems to me that edited messages could be also (that is, whatever was orginally posted would be retained in addition to any changes). That way, if someone denied a posting (which is pretty silly for them to do because there are usually witnesses to each thread), the powers that be could simply bring up the originals. But, of course, then they would probably be accused of tampering with the messages. It's kind of a no win, no win situation when people are (rightly or wrongly) mistrustful to begin with.

I just thought it might me nice if we could edit a message we post in the forums, rather than having to delete it and retype it entirely. Just a thought:)
