Subject: May or may I not sell Poser made stuff??

Benny Goodman ( ) posted Thu, 17 July 2003 at 5:41 AM · edited Thu, 14 November 2024 at 2:16 AM

I want to make stuff with Poser for free but also for sale. The Eula is somewhat confusing for me. The question is: can I make use of Poserstuff together with selfmade stuff as basic input, fabricate something out of them and sell it without being charged for it by Curious Labs, or asking permission first etc...?? thanks very much benny

You can't make for instance a box with Posette's head stuck on top if it and sell it. You CAN make a texture for Posette (or rather Vickie nowadays) and sell THAT. Likewise with Pose files. But anything that contains geometry (obj's) from Poser (or Daz ect.) is a no-no.

OK. Now suppose I make a model with a modeller, import it into Poser, work on it and export it, without using any object allready made by Curious Labs itself (i.e. from their CD or site)? Is that allowed then? And how about those people selling stuff from their gallery, including complete human models? BTW thanx for the response TrekkieGrrrl !! benny

ok- all of the models in poser you can't sell or give away, even the primatives. if you make it from scratch in another modeling program you can sell it.

True, Geogress. Only it's hard to distingueish between a Poser cube and a cube made in a modelling program. But it is still correct. Not even Poser Primitives can be sold. Benny Goodman, if people sell complete human models they have either modeled them themselves OR they are really an add on for existing characters. An example would be Frank and Gertrude that I have for sale here, they are based on Mike and Vickie and are in reality only morphs and face files for them, yet they appear as a "new" character. But if you model it yourself you can bring it in and out of Poser as much as you want :o) You've modeled it so you can do whatever you want with it :o)

You just can't put the words "Poserites" and "happy" in the same sentence - didn't you know that? LaurieA

Ernyoka1, if I morph a Curious Labs primitive in whatever way, even until it's almost unrecognizable anymore, then it's still considered a CL primitive, right?...wrong?(reading the second part of your story) Thanx guys for the answers so far anyway! benny

It is wrong if it started out as a CL primitive. My point is that noone can SEE if it's a Poser cube or an Anim8or cube if they have the same number of vertices/polygons. If you model a cube in Anim8or (or some other program) and bring it into Poser it is still YOUR cube. Now the REAL question is.. is it Discreet's cube too? :o)

you can sell anything you make 100% yourself. You can sell: morphs, textures, new figures, props, lights, etc You cannot sell: Anything based on someone elses work which includes original Poser content as supplied by Curious Labs or any other merchant. However, certain products have specific limitations due to the nature of the product. FOr example, to aell a character for Victoria 1, it is acceptable by DAZ if I sell a modified cr2. BUT to sell a characters for Victoria 2, due to DAZ's morphs included in the cr2, I cannot sell a cr2, but must sell a MOR pose setting and MAT texture setting instead. I suggest if you wish to make product for specific models, you read their readme, and contact the maker with questions. And of course you can always ask here :)

Remember that the Poser figure's CR2 file does not generally contain the model geometry. Therefore you can create a unique character based on an existing Poser figure and distribute the CR2 file. You would not need to distribute the copywriten Poser geometry file. As mentioned above there are exceptions regarding some figures, but generally this should answer your question.

Thanx for the responses everyone! Things are getting less mystified now. btw what does the word MAT mean? :-) benny

ernyoka1 ( ) posted Fri, 18 July 2003 at 2:20 AM

MAT is a special pose setting that alters MATerials instead of poses. They (normally) reside in the Pose library, and are therefore often referred to as MAT Poses. They provide an easy way of changing textures. Great for lazy people such as myself :o)
