Subject: Ferris Wheel - Where?

Veritas777 ( ) posted Mon, 28 July 2003 at 5:46 PM · edited Thu, 28 November 2024 at 9:14 PM

What happened to the guy who made the Ferris Wheel models- about three of them, I think? Getting psyched-up about more retro illustration ideas as Lululee's Swing-Time set nears release in the REN Store. BTW, Anyone know of other retro county-fair items like: Pin-Ball Machines Cotton Candy That deal that grabs toys with a little mechanical crane Shooting Gallery Bumper Cars And other nifty old stuff like that. Somehow I also always think of Alfred Hitchcock's classic movie with a carnival type them but can't remember the title. It was in B&W.

VK made a Ferris Wheel as part of an ERC tutorial he was doing, but I have no idea if he ever released it. You could try VK in Freestuff, or even IM him. He's a really helpful guy. 'That deal that grabs toys with a little mechanical crane' I seem to remember someone talking about trying to build one of those - a long time ago. mac

'That deal that grabs toys with a little mechanical crane' is normally called a Gold Digger in 'carnie' lingo. I helped build cabinets for some of them when my dad and I had a cabinet shop. The fellow that ran the game in the carnival built the basic machines, and they are 'geared' much like slot machines to pay off a certain percentage of plays according to the setup of the prizes. Completely off-topic but might be of interest to some.

I know SOMEBODY made some really nice Ferris Wheels for Poser because I have the product datasheets. They may have been offered through DAZ and have to be dug up through a text search. I don't understand why they don't display all their models available like Renderosity does. They would sell more models if you could find them, especially the older ones. Maybe they should have a DAZ ATTIC section of models in their inventory that they usually never show anymore. Did find a huge collection of Pinball Machine photos and reference info of classic machines from the 1930's through 1950's. It's in Sweden! Didn't know the Swedes had such interest in Pinball.

Oops. Forgot to post the link. Here's also a main link in case the other link doesn't work. There's tons of pictures. If you don't know of a name to search with, use "Bally" and it will turn up lots of classic stuff. http://www.lysator.liu.se/pinball/IPD/search.cgi I remember also seeing that "deal that picks up stuff" on a website somewhere, maybe in Germany. The model mave have been in MAX, but I'm not sure.

No luck here. I searched through my archives and found three Ferris wheels. All models, not props. But one I got through a props club type deal three years ago so it's not sharable (and it's nice bwa-ha-ha), another in dxf format has no readme (I have it marked as from WebTV if anyone wants to hunt for it for themselves..whatever webtv is.) A third very very simple one is distributable but only in its original format which is COB..so it can't be converted. I don't think Poser does Cob. But this is so simple it would only work in the far distance anyway. Very far. LOL Oh I found vk's little toy roller coaster, but not his ferris wheel. Non-distributable but cute as heck.

"cotton candy" should be easy... take a cone, invert it, and put ernyoka's suds-for-hair on top... just dye them pink first! (It will taste about the same, too.) Carolly

Thanks for your searching, Spit I KNOW that someone has seen these before! I have four JPG product-type renders of three Ferris Wheels, called: 1. Rumble Tumble 2. Proud Mary 3. Fortunate Son -and then a fourth render image of ALL THREE with a REN-type message tag of "Message375483.JPG" The file dates are all 8-14-2001. I saved the images because I thought that SOMEDAY I would like to buy one of those. They were, and still are, extremely impressive for their SIZE and DETAILS and the little Posettes are tiny. These were a MAJOR size model for Poser in those days (which was just less than one month away from the horrific and history changing day of 9-11-2001) Someone MUST remember such huge-scale models being offered for sale! (Also a lesson to Model Makers- put your name and email address on the corner of your product pics because somebody might want to track you down a year or two later). BTW, a Link to NEAT Pin-ball machine sound effects should a Poser Pinball machine turn up.

I remember having it somewhere and finally located it on an old backup CD (Thank God for CD Back-Ups) I hope this doesn't mess up any of Onnetz's planned carnival rides. It's a really great 3DS file that loads perfectly in Poser. No Readme.Txt and from all appearances ANOTHER old freebie from 3DCafe I bet. Has 16 double-passenger car seats with a huge black octopus center and four arms going out to the four passenger cars. To bad it doesn't have animatable arms to raise, lower and spin the passengers around. What a COOL model! Could be a fantastic Poser prop. Too bad we have no idea who made it, but it appears to be from the old 3DStudio era. (Great Ernyoka bait. Could get Cooler and Dodger into another courtroom scene- but hey, a GREAT WAY to learn about Copyright Law and International Treaties!) And Spit, you are right. Ernyoka's Suds prop works great for Cotton Candy, and also I've found, for Snow Cones!)

A great Canadian website with tons of links for almost anything related to Ferris Wheels, Carosels, Carnival Rides, Painted Horses, and lots of other stuff you can use as photographic refercences for creating models, scenes, etc.

Don't worry about me either, Veritas777 LOL I've converted my last mesh, at least for public use. Ah well, you live and learn. :o) Hmmm.. a candyfloss....might make one with a PROPER texture. And a proper shape. Even if the suds morph into a lot of different shapes I have trouble figuring it as a candyfloss L And it'll leave a bad aftertaste for sure too ;o)

Speaking of Carousels, I think most of us know about the gorgeous one in Platinum. But Snowfire Graphics has one at Vista Internet Products (VIP). And the great thing about Snowfire's is that if you have other animals too, you can use them! It has CR2's and maps for, besides horses, the Poser lion, zebra, cat, dog, and Dolphin. And rabbit if you have the free Capsces morphs. Also has CR2's for some VIP stuff like the goat and giraffe. Oh and the camel and hippocampus.

Veritas777 ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 2:30 PM

Yes, I'm thinking about getting that one over at VIP. It is very creatively done and you could create anything from real to surrealist-looking scenes with it.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 6:25 PM

I have the DAZ carousel, but have been looking at the vIP one for several months now. The idea of using all sorts of animals is appealing since many of the early carousels were rather eccentric in their selection. (Hey, they had to please the general populace, and some kids might want to ride a bunny while others prefered tigers and lions.) BTW, one of my favourite books on painted ponies says that there is only one carousel in the US with a unicorn. they are wrong. Besides the one in Maryland, the one down near the Monterey aquarium has unicorns. :) And mermaids. :))) Carolly

hauksdottir ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 6:28 PM

Maybe I'd better clarify that before the testosterone crowd heads for California with undue expectations. You don't get to "ride" the mermaids. There is a loveseat sort of thing with oceanic critters on it and the support poles are similarly decorated, IIRC. Carolly

maclean ( ) posted Tue, 29 July 2003 at 6:32 PM

Awww, gee! And I already booked my flight. (Sorry, boys. You can put away your flippers and goggles. The mermaid weekend is off) mac

Well, since PhilC had a saddle and bridle for Vicky in his "adult" section, it occured to me that some menfolk just might make a wrong assumption and be terribly disappointed. ;^) Carolly

For a total crack-up you should download the ELVIRA Pinball machine MP3's. What a LAUGH! Makes me realize how very artistic and wonderfully crazy Pinball designers were in making these machines!

maclean ( ) posted Wed, 30 July 2003 at 3:02 PM

A saddle and bridle? LOL. Nah... I'm not that kind of 'menfolk', carolly. mac
