Subject: How to get Poser obects into Vue

gnurf ( ) posted Wed, 09 August 2000 at 9:05 AM · edited Wed, 27 November 2024 at 6:30 AM

Can anyone tell me how I can get Poser objects imported to Vue. I don't have Poser at the moment so I hope there still is a way to get the objects imported. I would also appreciate if any tips and suggestions could be emailed to gnurf@surfnet.fi because unfortunately I don't have the time to visit this forum frequently. -Paul

Hi there It's very easy now with Vue 3.1, check out my image Stalking just posted to the Vue art gallery, the jaguar is a straight import from Poser, no touch up, no fiddling, just pose in Poser, export as OBJ, import into Vue and done. The only thing you have to be aware of is that Vue doesn't handle Bump maps or transperencies (at least not that I've worked out) and when you export to Vue you must put the texture files in the same directory as the export so Vue finds the textures when it imports. Best wishes Jody

Yes, I have read about the obj-export, but as I said, I don't - unfortunately - have Poser at the moment ... and I will probably not get it either i near future due lack of time to learn how to use it. Therefor i ask for a "workaround" -Paul

Well I am not sure I understand. You can import any .obj into Vue and then import the texture map and apply it or make your own texture. Poser is very easy to learn, but in order to use Poser models properly you do need Poser to postion them otherwise they are just stiff. Marge

buy poser.

Sorry, I thought you meant you were going to get Poser. In that case, you're stuffed really, buy poser :-)

bloodsong ( ) posted Wed, 09 August 2000 at 12:29 PM

heyas; if you don't have poser, and don't want poser... you don't need to know how to import poser objs. if you have props and stuff that are obj files, they're... just normal obj files, so you still don't need to know how to import poser obj's. if you have acquired a bunch of poser files (cr2s, pz3s, pp2s etc) from this or other free sites, they will do you no good without poser to read them. if you have, by chance, acquired some copyrighted geometries from poser without buying the program, this is illegal, and we do not support it. if this doesn't answer your question, please try to explain in more detail what you are trying to do. :)

quesswho ( ) posted Wed, 09 August 2000 at 4:23 PM

Personally I had nothing but problems with the demo and bought the program anyway, and I haven't regretted it for a second. Marge

gnurf ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2000 at 1:25 AM

Hello again, No, I have not illegally aquired any copyrighted stuff... what I would like to add into some of my Vue pictures are some free models - whitch are unfortunately not in obj format. Too bad (for me) it seems that I will have to wait for a while until I get the time for Poser. Anyway, thanks for clearing out the situation, Paul

tesign ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2000 at 3:57 AM

Hi Paul, You don't need Poser to do what you want to do, that's getting models in other format into Vue 3.1 If it does not require posing in Poser, you can get the free stuff you down loaded like Lightwave file (.lwo), 3ds, dxf etc...and convert them into wavefront .obj using program like 3D Explorer, PolyTrans (sp?) and Crosswind or crossroad (sorry I quite recall the actual neame). They are fully working demos for 30 days or so. If you have any free .lwo files downloaded fron somewhere, Vue 3.1 support up to LW version 5.6 only. Not sure about Maxs. Bill

gnurf ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2000 at 4:16 AM

Yep, I actually use 3D Explorer and I have got free objects imported to Vue without problems, but it would be nice to import some people or animals as well (usually made in Poser) to get more "life" into my scenes. A bunch of Mech:s and Star Wars figheters get a bit boring in the long run :-) I have seen some animal objects in obj and dxf format, but they all look so stiff and un-natural. They look rather stuffed than alive :-( -Paul

tesign ( ) posted Thu, 10 August 2000 at 9:26 AM

Hi Paul, if posing the model is what you need, well, I guess you have to buy Poser. There is no other way. If cost is a problem, check out ebbay or some place where you can find it cheaper. The same thing happened at the Poser list and there was quite a few indication, the lowest was $80.00 Some of the list member is also offering to sell their copy. Zygote is selling at $250.00 bundle with their model sampler CD. Bill

Unfortunately without Poser or something like 3DS Max with the character studio plugin or animation master while you could import obj files of figures you managed to download they'd be stuck in whatever postion they were uploaded in. Which 9 times out of ten is a person with their arms straight out to the sides. It wouldn't look all that lifelike. Poser in the basic level of posing a figure is very easy to learn. And there are tons of preset poses and outfits available at sites like this one. So the only issue here would be setting aside the funds to get it from your budget. There's also Animation Master at only $200 (or was it $300?) but I hear it has a much higher learning curve and fewer presets. But don't be discouraged from Poser on the issue of learning it. Basic posing is amazingly easy. All the discussion you see people doing for it comes with the more advanced stuff of making one's own custom characters or tricking Poser into behaving like it had a real rendering engine strapped onto it. :)

Hello, When y'all say that the Poser textures have to be in the same directory as the Poser .OBJ, you mean "folder", right? Does this mean everything (hair, hair textures, any and all props and their textures, etc) has to be copied and pasted into it's own folder prior to export? Is there an easier way of doing this? Thanks much! Mike

bloodsong ( ) posted Tue, 22 August 2000 at 5:57 PM

heyas; just mike: right, directories are sometimes called 'folders.' okay, here's what happens: poser exports and obj file and a mtl file (the materials.) the mtl file tells the obj what texture info to apply to the obj. for example, it will say something like blah blah texture: skintexture.jpg so when vue reads the obj/mtl pairing it looks for skintexture.jpg in the directory where the obj is (because there's no directory info on the line in the mtl file, see?) the easiest way, i think, is to open the mtl file poser exports and replace all the image file references with the full path to the texture. ie: blah blah texture: g:poserruntimetexturesskintexture.jpg or whatever. then, no matter where you put the obj and mtl file, it can find it's textures. you can keep all the textures wherever you normally store them, as well. otherwise, when you import the obj, vue will tell you it can't find this or that file, you say okay, the object imports, and you have to go and put the texture maps on by hand, anyway.

Thanks, bloodsong, that clears it up! Cheers, Mike

Hdrider ( ) posted Tue, 22 August 2000 at 10:24 PM

Bloodsong, Hmm..too bad there isn't a utility or something that will modify the mtllib file to point to correct textures path. I usually have to have two versions of the image maps, which is kind of a pain. Hand modifying the mtllib file isn't the easiest either. Just a thought. hdrider

bloodsong ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2000 at 4:21 PM

heyas; i dunno, hd, how would the utility know where your image maps are? :) editing the mtl isn't that hard; you can do a search and replace, and have it done semi-automatically. you'd have to tell the utility to replace what with what, anyway.

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 23 August 2000 at 5:26 PM

Hey, bloodsong, we heard ya the first time! Do you have any recommendations as far as text editors go? I've heard that Word Pad adds irrelevant stuff to the files. I've been trying to find the best way for manually editing various files. Thanks, Mike

bloodsong ( ) posted Thu, 24 August 2000 at 8:32 AM

heyas; i use notepad whenever and wherever possible. actually, notepad doesnt have a replace feature. i copied what i wanted to replace, did a search for the replace-ee, and hit ctrl-v f3 back and forth through the whole document. ;) but i hear editpad is good. or dos editor, i like dos editor. seriously. ;) wordpad sucks. if you try to save your file renamed... like as something .cr2 or something.mtl... it will name your file something.cr2.txt or something.mtl.txt. fascist microsoft crap....! ;)

MikeJ ( ) posted Fri, 25 August 2000 at 2:46 AM

bloodsong, Yeah, I know what you mean about Word Pad... I had the same damn problem, but Note Pad can't open really large files. Anyway, thanks for the tip about EditPad... I found it and got it....can't say I'm much for manually editing cr2's yet, though. Probably I should learn what all that crap in there means first! Hey, though,l on the bright side, I've had no problem using the hard way for getting Poser people into Vue, textures intact... I just wish Vue would accept and render bump maps...maybe they will one day. Later, Mike

Hi All, I just got Vue d'Esprit 3.1. I also have Bryce 4 and Poser 4. I have no trouble getting the poser figures into Vue with the textures. My problem is that the figures themselves seem to be jointed even in a simple standing pose without any severe bending of limbs etc. The area near the waist and hips is very pronounced. The same obj model dropped into Bryce is smooth. Is there anyway to correct this problem? I assume there is as I have seen some work posted here that does not exhibit this problem. James

jas1746 ( ) posted Sun, 27 August 2000 at 10:08 AM

I seem to have found an answer on my own. The "Weld Body Parts Together" is the default setting in Poser 4's export to obj file and I have always used this when using Bryce 4. Deselecting this produces a obj model which Vue 3.1 renders without the joint problems. If there is something else I need to do please let me know. James

bloodsong and all, I use this program called UltraEdit. I've put some really big files into it and so far it hasn't choked. It works with text files as well as exe or whatever. www.ultraedit.com Later, hdrider
