... I know there are a couple here using DLWarrior's uniforms and props. GenCon is the largest American gaming convention, and it is moving from Wisconsin (home of TSR) to Indiana. They just spun off a southern California event. Dec 11-14 in Anaheim. See www.gencon.com for details. What amuses me is that gaming conventions normally feature guests who make games, with the occasional writer or actor who contributes to one. This flyer has William Shatner in central position surrounded by 3 men from Battlestar Galactica (Hatch, Benedict, Jefferson), 4 from Babylon 5, and a lady from Farscape. Like most such media-oriented cons, the dealer's room will be full of appropriate merchandise and there will be photo opportunities and perhaps an official costume event. At Origins (the second-largest gaming convention in America) there is a group who demonstrates how to make the stormtrooper uniforms and other high-tech gear; they are likely to be here. Poser artists in the Southern California area might want to get a closer look at the costumes and props before going off and modeling their own scifi gear. Carolly

Its not fair , all these good things happen in america and if they come to britain they end up in london which is also too far for me to travel to ( the star wars exhibition for example).

Almost afraid to utter the word Galactica after the TRAVESTY of a remake the SF channel is foisting on the public. It's like they said... hey let's take every single thing that was cool about galactica, remove it and replace it with some awful crap worse than Terminator 3. Hope a Cylon centurian shoots em in the butt.

hauksdottir ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 7:19 AM

I had my own problems with the original series. It was stupid in the basic story and premise and plotting. Example 1: Here's a guy who single-handedly destroys 10 planets full of life and culture by greed, betrayal, and treachery. Our heroes get to him early on, when he is trapped in some rubble. Do they immediately hold court rounding up a dozen jurors? Nope. Do they shoot him on sight because this is war and civilization itself has just gone down the tubes? Nope. Do they fix him so that he can never make trouble again even if he should be rescued or freed? Nope. They just shake their heads over his perfidy and keep moving... letting him get away. Boys playing by Marquess of Queensbury Rules. They don't think it would be fair to kill a trapped rat? I do! Example 2: The kid and the mechanical doggie. Whose lame brain conceived of a BARKING critter on board a space ship (metal walls, small space, irritated neighbors with raw nerves because they've just lost everything). I would have put them both in the airlock and pushed the button myself the first time either of them put a whisker outside of their cubicle. As for letting the kid stow away on planet-side missions? :roll eyes: Cute may be needed for audience ratings, and the children are the future they are protecting, but endangering the entire mission and the lives of every last remaining human for a PhotoOp is stupid. Example 3: What sort of scoundrels would drag the entire enemy armada to Earth? If Earth hasn't yet become aware of the problem, it doesn't have the resources and technological development to fight a galactic war. As Asimov once wrote so succinctly, if the aliens find us, we'd better hope that they are friendly. If a ship full of refugees landed on my porch saying "We've got hyperdrive, and you have 3 months to build a fleet," I wouldn't appreciate it. It would be far better for them to reseed the universe as widely and thoroughly as possible, trusting in the human nature of survival to make lots of children, in lieu of shepherding everybody together like eggs in one basket. If it takes a thousand years for civilization to develop again on a thousand worlds, so be it. The race has survived. And perhaps one of those civilizations will develop in such a way that betrayal and treachery aren't rewarded because each individual has his own worth. That said, the show had interesting effects and props and was better than the others available for watching. The episode where the guys were willing to give up their lives for each other was good (it got to the heart of what makes us human and worthy of life). And, decades later, I can remember some of the scenes... so it couldn't have been that bad. (I don't remember Space 1999 at all.) Carolly

The new sci channel Galactica series si going to SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK SUCK!!!!! the "cylons" are artificial humanoids replete with "poser vickesque" buxom blond cylon characters. Ive nothing against peppering the sci genre with gratuitous "hot chicks" to bring in the under 30 horny males geeks. ( see star trek voyager) BUT I was so looking forward to see a modern iteration of the menacing Cylon battle droids here in 2003 And LT starbuck is a now woman who will predictably provide the OH SO predictable 'sexual tension" with Capt Apollo YAWN!!!!!!!!! it sounds like "melrose place" meets a bad starwars ripoff ......PASS :-(

Ive seen some prelim sketches of the cylons. There are robots and they do have the red eye. However...I think what theyve done is instead of having the humanoid cylons that served Baltar (Lucifer and Spectre) theyve replaced with a "synthetic" woman...the Poseresque busom blond previously mentioned. And yeah...Starbuck is a woman. shaking head so much for the origens of our myths.

Lessee... The Skiffy Channel has screwed the Aldeberan pooch now with; Farscape. Bablyon 5. B5: Legend of the Rangers. MST3K. Trek Classic STTNG. And Now Battlestar Galactica... I wonder if they ever even =saw= Battlestar Galactica (I do =NOT= consider 'Galactica 1980' as part of the series cannon. It was little more than a rancid brainfart between wannabe 'CHiPs' and 'Six Million Dollar Man' writers with a hard-on for Robbie Rist). And wondering what they will do regarding the Galactica herself is a valid fear; Larson sold the model to a collector a few years ago, so unless it was rented back, they will be starting over (who wants to bet on an 'improved' CG Galactica with new super dooper focus group enhancements? Say like Lexx's bulbs?). And Starbuck a woman? Skiffy hasn't got the balls to have that kind of portrayal (not that female fighter jocks don't exhibit said behavior. In fact, they can be worse than the guys ;P ). And we won't even mention what a romantic relationship between officers of differing rank, in the same unit, who go out and get shot at would actually be like. Or how many rules would be broken to allow something like that to happen (Now if the Starbuckette was a cigar chewer, and had the charm of a goddess and the hormones of a room of 15 year olds with their first vibrator.... Now -that- might be something to see...! Not to mention being completely in character). I may have to watch the first episode, to see if it is going to be as bad as it sounds.... I wonder what ever happened to the idea of doing something original, and taking credit for that.....

lwanmtr ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 4:28 PM

Original...I like that... Originality went out once they discovered the sequel, spin off , prequel and just plain redoing a thing. But I will watch with an open mind...I mean, I sat through Taken, and Battlestar can't be as bad as that..at least it has space battles (which was Wing Commander's only good point..and I dont count them dropping a fighter off the deck..heh).

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 4:50 PM

I'll be watching it, if only to have a legitimate reason to bitch about it afterward.

The Skiffy Channel has screwed the Aldeberan pooch now with;

Farscape.

I take it that you haven't heard the latest rumours, then, concerning Sci-Fi putting Farscape back in production to film 4-6 more episodes, wrapping up the series and giving it a proper conclusion, rather than that abrupt season-finale cliffhanger with which we're currently stuck?

XENOPHONZ ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 5:25 PM

I miss MST3K.

It sounds like the new SFC Battlestar Galactica series will be an ideal candidate for the MST3K treatment........

As for the original TV series....it was typical televsion. It had its interesting points, but the stories were often just plain silly / stupid.

I agree with hauksdottir - dragging that irritating kid along on planetside missions - how many high-security military facilities are regularly infiltrated by 7-year old stowaways and their cute pets? And, of course, every military troop going on a critical mission will include a 7 year old or two in their personnel rosters. Happens all the time.

Of course -- on at least one issue the original BSG was more realistic than Star Trek. The issue is this: a ship's captain DOES NOT GO OUT on field missions, in hostile territory, with a few red-shirt guards and several of his command-grade officers.....while leaving his ship's crew behind to fend for itself. No, a real ship's captain orders his troops out on missions. Then, the captain himself stays on the bridge, and directs matters from there.

At least, BSG usually did it that way, unlike Star Trek.

BSG (the original) was good old space opera. They frequently confused star systems with galaxies, had awful consistency with their own made up SF lingo, (What the Frak is a centon anyway? ya lousy piece of felgercarb!)^_^ They also used a lot of stock footage despite the VERY high budget. all that said it is a wonderful space opera, and I count it right up there with B5 and star trek TOS. The new show is PURE FELGERCARB... I mean even the vipers aren't cool looking. I personally despice remakes, cuz they almost always end up like this. and Taken was good. :p

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 8:19 PM

In all fairness, Sliders started sliding downhill long before Sci-Fi got hold of it, starting with the loss of Arturo (John-Rhys Davies) and the introduction of the Kromaggs.

Attached Link: http://www.galactica2003.net/

Lots of concept art and photos from the mini series SciFi is doing. Cylon ships look more like Babylon 5 ships. Galactica is more streamlined. Cylons have been updated and are more robot like, actually they look like the Super clone droids from StarWars EPII to me. anyway, take a look. cast photos are also there, and Kara "Starbuck" looks like a hottie, even though it still makes me a bit weirded out with just 'call signs'. Boxey is in the mini series too, but NO Dagit at all.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 8:44 PM

Actually, they remind me of RoboCop 2. :)

And the original chrome-plated Cylon Centurions will make an appearance in the miniseries ... as deactivated 50-year old relics of the initial robot rebellion, in display cases tucked away in Galactica's museum wing.

Berserga ( ) posted Thu, 13 November 2003 at 9:46 PM

Personally I consider those type of "homages" to be more of a slap in the face than anything. They go on and on about what a "brave new concept " this mini series is... yet the design philosophy and Terminator ripped off story really look like every other SF movie that comes out these days. (Brings to mind the "Lost in space" movie... eeeyeech. Paul Verhoven can pull off a cast of way too young and pretty people in an ugly situation due to his biting sense of satire (and his pervy dutchness) but whoever they got to direct this cant I'll wager Oh well I'll probably watch it... it might even be decent. The trailer wasn't as awful this time as the first time I saw it (except for the fembot...ugh.) But IMO they should have simply borrowed the very few ideas they wanted from Galactica, and called the series something else... because it is.

I read someplace that they completely redid the Nielson rating system shortly after the third season of the original Star Trek. They figured out that Star Trek had actually been a smash hit in the demographics so beloved of advertisers everywhere, but by then it was too late. BSG was a lot of fun back in the 70's - they spent a lot of money and seemed to have a good time. I'll be watching the new miniseries, but my guess is that it won't be very good.

xantor ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 9:25 AM

Buck rogers was excrement. Star wars is still the best science fiction film ever and probably will always be. The cylon helmet in galactica was a rough copy of darth vaders hat. The two main men were han solo clones. There are a lot of other "similarites" as well.

xantor ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 9:28 AM

Buck rogers and flash gordon were very low budget and it shows. The story and dialogue was very bad and some of the costumes were used from old roman soldier suits from old epic films. The newer buck rogers was pretty bad too.

xantor ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 9:31 AM

By the way, they didn`t spend much money on BSG as longcray said. There was a tv special type thing which had the viper spaceships painted in the background it was used in more than one scene. A lot of the spaceships exploding was the same film repeated over and over again. The special effects were very good for a tv program at that time, though

LonCray ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 9:40 AM

Oh, I disagree - I've read over and over again that the per-episode costs of BSG were over a million bucks - more than any TV show up to that time. Yes, they reused a lot of stock footage, but they burned thru an awful lot of ABC's money doing it.

DarkElegance ( ) posted Fri, 14 November 2003 at 9:53 AM

The original Star Trek TV series was killed by network politics. This is the explaination that I've heard (if you can believe it): Classic Trek was TOO popular. And the network knew it. Thus, EVERY potential sponser wanted to advertise on the show. This made any sponsers that got cut out of the action angry. The network did not want to deal with angry sponsors. Thus, the show HAD to die to keep the peace. It sounds convoluted, I know. But this is the opinion that Red Skelton, of all people, which he stated in an interview at the time that Star Trek got cancelled. Moving the show to an 11:00PM time slot was a deliberate attempt to kill the ratings, and thus, the series. The original BSG TV series was bad; the Buck Rodgers TV series from the same era was so bad that it was painful to watch. Galactica 80 was even worse still. But, I suspect that the new SCF BSG will break records for BAD.

I dunno what they are doing or thinkin over there but since Farscape stopped airing I haven't watched much SciFi Channel. Taken was okay got silly near the end. Farscape is my fav so far of all the series out. Galatica mini is gunna bite bad, but I know I'm gunna watch at least the 1st show, gotta see how the sets look and get design ideas hahahaha.

RHaseltine ( ) posted Sat, 15 November 2003 at 6:36 AM

I've said it before, and been ignored, but Farscape suffered from a bad case of power-inflation. In series one they had Aeryn's gun and Dargo's sword and that was it (though the gun did seem to recover from exploding a time or two), the body count was low (several times a whole episode passed without any deaths) and they were having to struggle to get by even against weak opposition. Later on they had multiple big guns and took down whole armies of guards and raiders, which outnumbered them dozens to one, with a ridiculous body count and a reluctance to leave minor characters alive by the end of the episode, and the enemies got more and more powerful with the plot being "balanced" by writers whim rather than careful construction. It was still fun, but the first series was vastly superior to my taste.
