Subject: Who's having the best video card luck with OpenGl for Macs? Info conflicts...

Guys,

While Nvidia (Geforce 4 MX 64m) gladly sells to Macs, they do not support them with driver updates - an all too common problem. Apple doesn't offer any for 4, either. OpenGL ain't happening with this card, folks....it crashes after just a few minutes.

This is my first 3D app, and I'm struggling with all the Mac card options out there. There's been some mention of them needing to be "Quartz Extreme" enabled, but I have no idea what that means. I'd like something that will support OpenGl like a dream for Vue4. While Apple's support of OpenGL is been lacking, I understand Panther addresses this - but I'm concerned about it because Vue4 for Mac is very glitchy, and Panther might cause as many problems as it fixes. And... I don't wish to give Steve Jobs another $125 for a .2 upgrade.

Running a Dual GIG Quicksilver/1.5 GIGs ram. I'd like a card that will fill the bill for now, and down the road for other 3-D apps. Any suggestions are most appreciated.

Holly

I just installed an update that gave me O-GL support. My card is a Nvidia Geforce 2 - I think. There was also an update for Mac - have you installed that? (It was a multi update for several cards) Sorry, but that's my best shot!

On the mac the NVIDIA drivers are released by Apple. Usually with OS updates. Panther may very well fix this as it has updated drivers and OpenGL. What version of the OS are you running? Quartz extreme is for accelerating the actual OSX GUI using OpenGL. This is available only on 10.2 and above. Basically you need an AGP Mac with a newer AGP card (any ATI Radeon or NVIDIA GeForce card). It uses the Cards GPU to accelerate the windows and drawing of screen objects. If you have the hardware to support it, OSX automatically enables it. It makes a huge difference in performance when using the OS, It is not going to help with 3D rendering apps though. Personally I feel that the ATI cards are better supported on the Mac and seem to have less glitches with the 3D apps I have. (Bryce, Carrara, Vue, Strata.) Look into an ATI 9600 - 9800 Pro, you will be impressed. Regards, Paul

On Vue Pro OGL is more highly evolved and my Geforce4 MX works great. The same card causes random crashes on Vue4 (non-pro) on my Mac although it is much more stable with Vue 4.2 update. And yes every update for OSX already contains the NVIDIA driver updates. Scott
