Subject: Any ideas on how to run "Painter 3D for Poser" on Win2K?

Jim Burton ( ) posted Wed, 26 November 2003 at 7:30 PM · edited Fri, 09 August 2024 at 1:17 AM

Remember the 3D paint program that came with Metacreations Poser 4? Anybody have any ideas on how to get it to run on Windows 2000? I get a "Not enough memory" message, and I only have 2GB, Shucks! ;-) I get the same message from the old Detailer program, which I also own (which is abandonware, I gather). I can get both of them to run on my old computer in the Win 98 partition, but it would be nice to run it off the new one, as otherwise I gotta do the reconnect the tablet tricks and all that stuff. I just want to correct some simple edges on a texture for Poser, anybody know of a CHEAP 3D program <$100, maybe?

Jim,

Painter 5.5 gave the same error message if the Windows page
file was set over 1023 MB. You may want to see if adjusting this helps.

I have dual boot system, win2k and winME. I loaded painter 3d (the full blown app) on ME and then just opened the executable in win2k and it works just fine.

Boy, that's an argument for a dual OS system! I have only Win2K and WinXP (laptop), but Painter 3D won't run. It has all kinds of problem, beginning with the open file dialog. I also have the full version (only 1 version ever made it to product!). I'm sorry that I can't provide any help. I don't think there is any solution. I'd like to be proven wrong, though. Norm

As Mattb says, several of the old Metacreations applications can't count high enough to cope with today's memory spaces - setting a smaller swap file, so that the total of RAM+swap is under 2GB, should fix that problem.

Why bother !!!! ......seriously Painter 3D is garbage!!!! its one of those moldy peices of unbaked bread that Metacreations (meta who???), tossed over the gate to the unsuspecting faithful o try and bolster their stock value right before fleeing the 3D market for that oh so promising "meta stream" ultimate web tool blah blah blah :-/ there are so many viable solutions for texture painting available today. spare yourself the headache.

Hmmm, I used that a while back. I've always either run 2k or xp, so it is possible. It was slow and sloppy, but worked. Somewhere along the way I even found a fix for the missing import options dialogue. Nowadays I use UVmapperPro with PSP7.

"there are so many viable solutions for texture painting available" O.K., I'm game, name some that cost under (say) $100! I wouldn't mind having Deep Paint, but I'd never use it enough to justify the cost. I mostly leave the "super" textures to others, like MAB. But I have these crooked lines I have to fix, wherec they cross parts of the map... I do have a dual boot system on my old computer, and the new and the old are networked and have a KMV connection, so it isn't that painful to use, but I'll try the other suggestions, thanks guys! Oh, the 4th Import Option down is an OBJ importer, that seems to actually work, even though it is marked "XX" on the menu. ;-)

PSP is $80 if you insist on painting direclty onto 3D object that old Meta C app will suck badly as it has NO open GL or graphic card support so forget about real time previews much like poser itself :-(

I don't think it's an OS issue - Painter had the same problem, in windows 9x as well as the NT versions. EricofSD is running it in both OSes, so unless there was an installation problem (and it sounds as if Jim Burton has it on his system, just not running) it should be more-or-less XP friendly. It may be MC used a signed integer to report memory availibility - the SimCity 2000 installer told me I had -16MB free on my 32MB machine, and should free more RAM if I wanted it to run (fortunately the game itself was fine).

I don't think so..check the links posting above, I downloaded it for free. If that's changed (and doesn't everything), one of these magazines recently had it as a freebie Digit, 3d World, Computer Art..well, I think it did. It used to be free, as recently as August.

I looked at the Paint Shop Pro page at JSC's (?) site, they don't mention anything at all about painting in 3D, though. I gave up on the Poser version, it gets confused on the OBJ mapping, but I did finally get Detailer working on my Win 98 partition. It actually isn't all that bad! ;-)
