I've always wanted an Armillary sphere for my back yard, so I designed and modeled one in Amapi.....you can't put that in your back yard you say, well you're right, but I'm getting back into metal sculpture again and I'm going to make it in the real world too..... Also working on new pattern packages both freestuff and RMP, that's a new one on the fabric drape, getting that satin metallic thread work is tough.... Crits and comments, this isn't an actual wip but the models and fabrics are going into several wips I have going...

Looks lovely, please show a picture of the one you make out of metal. Each time I read you title I say "what are armillaries". LOL I had a picture of a critter from down south that has a hard shell (armadillo). That fabric looks awesome too. :-D

Yeah, i love the fabric, love the armilladillarilo sphere thingy. Hate you and your artistic talent..i wish i could do that.

I would like to try modelling one of those in Bryce. It's really nice.

I always wondered what they were called. Nice modelling.

Beautiful sextant, Zhann. Please tell me you didn't model this..........please, I couldn't bear it if you did, I'd have give up modeling altogether..........

Ah yes, Zhann, the woman of many talent's. This is lovely work Zhann and I'd be most interested if you kept a pictoral history while making this for real. It would be interesting to see how you work. 8) Catlin

Holy Moley Bryster, if I modeled that sextant I wouldn't be pulling my hair out in Wings LOL....but it's what I'd shot for...That sextant is from the Noblecollection.com catalog, really cool fanasty stuff and perfect reference material, but very pricey stuff to order. I cut out stuff I'd like to model then figure out how to do in the modelers I have...

Catlin, when we're back on our feet and can afford
'extras' I'll start the metal one for my yard, I'm thinking copper and poprivets, welding supplies are too expensive at the moment, and I'll keep a photo record, actually I'll do a pictorial tutorial so everyone can build one for themselves, how's that sound? I've got a really neat process for sculpting cement, I haven't published yet, for making a unique base too....:)

This was in the catalog that came in the mail day after I finished the one above......

If I could figure out the fake HDRI thing, I'd like to do a render and have it look like the sextant pic above, I just can't seem to get it to work.....:

Toolset: Blender, GIMP, Indigo Render, LuxRender, TopMod, Knotplot, Ivy Gen, Plant Studio.

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 5:58 AM

I saw those, they're Bryce presets, the armillary depends somewhat on Bryce's transparency settings to get the interior ball. The one above is an .obj, so you can use it in any 3D app that supports .obj. I'm trying to UV map it for textures....

A tutorial would be great Zhann. I've only ever tried metal work once and that was a long time ago but I do have access to a studio, near to home, where I could give it another try for a down payment of a few pounds, that's if I knew how to go about it. lol 8) Catlin

Erlik ( ) posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 3:55 PM

Zhann, you've infected me with this armillary thing, you know? I've downloaded a couple of pics of armillary sundials, pocket watches and stuff... Beware! :-) BTW, do you know where I can find a fine photo or two of an orrery?

Zhann ( ) posted Fri, 28 November 2003 at 5:34 PM

Erlik, sorry, can't say as I do, but a google search might help.... Catlin, you can do the metal sculpting in your house, or in the yard or your basement, and that includes the cement sculpting also (although it's best to do that outside, because of the amount of water required). No need to spend any money except for supplies, and they are few.The metal would be the most expensive. Check for a sheet metal shop near you, and the price of a sheet of 32oz copper.

You've got me scanning the internet for pics too Zhann. I've got pic's of iron gates, sundials, armillaries and birdbaths. Erlik just type in what you're looking for in a search engine, I used Yahoo, and it will come up with loads of online stores selling them, and mostly they have pictures too. 8) Catlin

Erlik, I have a model of an orrery, that I got from somewhere, I can't remember. You are welcome to that if you want it.
