I also have some luck using layers, changing the settings, liminosity, burn, overlay etc. also I use transparancy. Set the hair brush color to black and then apply it along the edges of the body of the wing it will give the apearance of an outline of the feather. Also a bump map sounds like a good idea too. I also think you have to decide whether or not your feathers are soft and fluffy or stiff like a crow's wing feathers...stiff feathers do not look furry or fuzzy they have a shine to them. hope this helps
Transparency's seem the way to go, Im working on the map now, Thanks for that susgestion. Im trying to make Stiff feathers, but a photoshop approach is not giving me alot of options. So I went with the soft look because I know no other way to do it. Working on a new brush set, thanks folks.. Blacksteel
