hehehe, its easy to get sidetracked. We have actually spent some time looking at other landscape applications, and some of them offer some nice features that we will be bringing to Bryce. One such feature is from Mojo World, where water plans and objects with water materials can be told to have small waves near and at the point of intersection where water touched land, or any other object. ie: a cylinder (pole) sits in a water plane, the water plan will intelligently place ripples around the pole. We are still deciding wether this will be accomplished by texture maps, or, more dynamically using new displacement maps. If it ends up being displacement maps, then it means that the good news is that displacement maps will also be available for all other main objects, including terrains. Scott
Ive always wondered about the user base for bryce. Ive been lurking here for years, and watched people come and go. Im thinking for every user of bryce thats posts (in any given forum), and/or posts a pic in a gallery, theres 50 more that dont. All in all, the established bryce user base is bigger then many people think. Im sure theres B4 users that havnt even upgraded yet. (I'm one), and if everything comes to pass with bryce 6, I'll be first in line for it :)
All that Bryce really needs is someone like Scott who has a passion for it. Corel has no passion, to them, Bryce is just another product with no other value than profit. I always though that if someone who really cares about Bryce got hold of it and was able to work on it, then we would have something that is truely remarkable. So I'm going to keep hold of every lucky charm, crossed fingers and toes, and anything else I can think of, in the hope of willing this new Bryce 6 to be born. 8) Catlin
Scott, First I'd like to say that I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade. Bryce was one of my first 3D programs, and I ( like most ) love it, and care about it's well being. I like the fact that you say that the interface will be completely customizable, that's a big plus for me. The majority of Bryce users are beginners, amateurs, and hobbyist, they use the program to make images, and short animation. Of those using the program professionally ( were not talking about posters and CD covers ) use Bryce for it's terrain abilities. Very few use it for rendering, because it's so slow. As far as modeling Bryce is useless ( except for terrains ) because they can not be exported. So the great models and creations that are made in Bryce, remain in Bryce to be rendered. And even if they are able to be exported in the future, most will not use Bryce for modeling because it's faster and easier to model in a program that was designed for it. So my conclusion is, what good does it do to knock off a few minute of the work flow process, when it's going to take 3 or 4 times longer to render than it should. Features like GI and radiosity would basically be useless in Bryce, because even amateurs don't have 1 or 2 weeks to wait on a render. So I say, Bryce doesn't need a new interface, it needs more features and a new rendering engine, or a rendering solution, besides network rendering. Because most Bryce users can not afford a little render farm.
Two other quick wishes for Bryce 6:
Simple example: create a thin positive disk and use a negative elongated cube to carve a square all the way through the middle. Then 'compress' that group, so it turns into a single neutral mesh of a disk with a square hole in the middle, no negative boolean object would remain.
Stephen Ray, You may have missed some of my earlier posts here, and on my web site. But the rendering engine will be faster for sure. there is a lot of optimization to be done on the render engine. Its a full ray tracer, which is why it's slow. Also, true global illumination and radiosity won't be that slow, it will be faster than fake radiosity which uses 100's of lights, and I can render images with fake radiosity in a day or two at high resolution. Taerin, Boolean flattening will be provided :) Scott
HI Foleypro, at this time, Doc has not shown any interest thus far. I have contacted them over at Pandromeda, but its very obvious that Ken is totally dedicated to MOJO and the business that it is creating. However, we may come to an agreement where we can license much of his fractal algorithms and rendering engine code, but this will be discussed in the future at more detail. I know that there is already one other terrain modeling package out there using Ken's new fractals Scott
Scott all this looks very promessing and you doing more then I have seen most do in trying to save everyones here (My first 3d rendering) fav prog. First and formost Im just thrilled that Bryce6 isnt a dream that is lost. And withall the resourses you have ie; dreams, wish lists, etc you will have more than you need to make an exceptional preadessor to B5 Excuse the speeling errors. If I could have one wish for Bryce 6 It would be to export obp files. Or even convert them to obj :)
