For free 2d textures, Mayang.com is one of the best.

oh..I didn't throw in the 2d stuff, I'm still hazy in the DTE lab..well, considering all the good free ones out there, it's not really motivational to make your own, though I have some ideas..;) Don't have the database with me, but Mayang is good, so is LEMOG, Textures (a czech place), grsites, textures by tuesday, and others..
