Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 24 4:22 pm)
That is not initially easy! I have imported a Poser file into DAZ Studio and did two 3072x3072 Render-To-Disk renders. The OpenGL rendered in almost a FLASH!. The non-OpenGL took several minutes, but looked quite different from the original Poser image- mainly like the lighting was set too high. An interesting image, but NOT the same. Bottom line- in this ALPHA stage, it is hard to compare Apples to Apples. There doesn't appear to be an immediate translation of identical light levels- so you can't make exact comparisons. This is an ALPHA release- meaning NOT EVEN BETA! I'm amazed that my Poser files even load an look similiar!
By the way- it saves currently in JPG and TIF only. I'm sure more will be added later. People have to remember that this is just an ALPHA to give folks a look. The DAZ files are content organizing files, linked to the OBJ's, textures, etc. They are EXTREMELY SMALL, so you can imagine the possibilities for easy, flexable content management. This will be great for workgroup scenerios- no doubt a result of how DAZ operates internally- saves tons of file transfer time and space!
I've been running five different runtimes with P4 PP (one at a time, of course) and after I gave DAZ Studio the go to find my other content it was able to load a DAZ Charger Pz3 from Drive F and use the textures and obj stored in my P4 Animals runtime on Drive E. I think it is like PBoost or Correct Reference- it needs to run a search to catalog where everything is. After it has done that it seems to work. I imagine a really EXOTIC setup could probably fake it out quite nicely, but if you have used the standard runtime hiearchy, even in mutltiple runtimes on different drives, it seems to work 95% of the time. I think you need to consider also that if the Poser files already have "Incorrect References", which is likely the case in those other 5%, that will lead to a missing texture map that has to be found manually. Obviously-then- either DAZ will provide a better search mechanism- or someone like Horseless Headsmen will provide a plug-in utilty optimized for DAZ Studio! Since DAZ Studio is starting from 2004 technology, this could be MUCH MORE accurate, especially using the new DAZ indexing file- something Poser doesn't have.
There is a lot to like about D|S considering it is Alpha. I was surprised at how good it was but there are still many features to fix and add before it comes close to a fully functional program. My first few renders look slightly soft, and lack crisp texture detail. Lighting is good, and it is really nice to see a point light! But Poser light sets seem to come in very bright. I suspect that material settings and spectral qualities account for most of this because of the very different way D|S handles the material shaders. The shaders and lighting look VERY good here, but may not interpret previous Poser scenes the same way that Poser does (I think this is a good thing ;-)
The lighting system is not the same. No way to match lighting. DS lights are infinately superior.

I would agree that the lighting is vastly superior to Poser 4 even at this stage but the render output is not up to the level of P5 yet. Unfortunately the D|S renders seem to lack sharpness and detail. So far I've been unable to find render settings to increase the sample rate (or maybe alter the pre-optimizing of images), but I assume that more render options will come at some point. For now though, the best lighting in the world doesn't do much if everything is out of focus. All-in-all it is an excellent Alpha and bodes well for the future :-)

PS: One light is behind lighting the Cyclorama and the other is in front. I am noticing th joint changes. I like that in Studio Vicki's upper arms don't have the bowing curve on the outside contour.

Ron, I think it is not the renderer but how the materials are being set. Look in the above image. Poser is not clearer overall. The each beat each other in certain spots In the above image the lips are much crisper where Poser has clearer eyes. i think it is the materials. Studio: Crisper teeth, Lips, contours Poser4: Crisper skin, eyeballs, trans, brows But I never ever render this close. hehe. The antialias might be a bit higher. But I think it is the material settings upon import.

The nostrils in the studio render is much sharper, as is the mouth in the studio render too

OpenGl is a form of Hardware Graphics accelleration associated with videocards. Do you have an old videocard or system?

The render took long time for my picture 25 minutes! But it's raytracing with 2 shadowlights. The camrea moves in 'Realtime' in OpenGL (with full textures and transmaps). Mazak

Oh and I forgot: Render time 3:57 minutes on a 2.0 Ghz P4, 256 mb Ram, WinXp home :oD

my image took about three minutes to render with two pin(bulb) lights. Ernoyaka 1, that llooks like Stephanie's twin brother. The face is so close but on a boy.

"The render took long time for my picture 25 minutes! But it's raytracing with 2 shadowlights." It appears that transparent raytraced shadows are 3Delight's weak spot. I had comparable results with my own RIB exporter, turning off transparency made it a lot faster (and uglier with transmapped hair). How fast are shadow maps?
Hmm Actually you're right, Anton :) Purely coincidense though. I just clicked a few of the ethnic sliders in D|S and liked what I saw :o)

Thanks Stewer :o) The point is that I didn't know, even after using Poser for 3-4 years. That's one thing again where the OpenGL preview is great, I could SEE my new light instantly and place it so it lit the parts I wanted. I stopped using Bryce for my renders when I got the first mill. people becourse I hated all the parts you had to change texture on in Bryce, but one thing I miss was the lights. Now I've got them back :oD

I'd really like to see an identical scene done in both apps if that's possible. Maybe by using one simple light and a single figure. Can't wait till it appears in my account. Grrr... mac
