I got some pretty results using Catharina's displacement map for fur. I used it on the Hound Gargoyle figure. Thanks Cat! -Brian

Incredibly cool. He's a whole new beastie, now. I especially like the third pic. Fantastic effect!

I worked on the GargoyleHound with Michael Lane. I miss collaborating with Michael. he and I did the Cat together too. I loved making animals with him. I hope he sees this. Bery cool indeed. Please show a render with one of the skeletal ghouly body morphs too. -Regards, Anton

I'm a fan of your work too, of course. :) Just a sidebar: I don't think I would have signed up for the Platinum Club when it first arrived if there wasn't your stellar work to hook me in. BTW, I sure do miss not having any new stuff of yours there. -Brian

hey Thanks. Nice to know the effort was appreciated. Sometimes you don't think people notice. Again, love the images.

"BTW, I sure do miss not having any new stuff of yours there." Hear, hear! DAZ is still great of course, but there's a definite, um, change in lieu of Anton's signature contributions. IMO they defined the "DAZ look" for a long time. Looking forward to seeing his new site when it's ready!

you can find it at this thread: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12356&Form.ShowMessage=1639073 posted yesterday

has anyone looked into using the displacement on M3's scalp as a form of hair?

Brian, EXCELLENT!!! you did this exact as needed! btw why I was working on yesterday? I have to use the displacement maps as a part of the head (hair) for Michael, the new hair head textures include some parts with displacement textures a very funny effect but really great and don't looks like a fur in the final render. The Gargoyle Hound is top creature I had so much fun using this already! very good work on this model! cath

I'm seeing black specks on the cat. I used the same settings as the dog in Cath's post. What should I do?

Mec4D ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2004 at 10:36 AM

you can use DSP also only of some parts the to get nice effect as in the image above and the displacement was used only on the part of his texture head... P.S the freak looks really as freak now.. scary movie 4 Cath

Jeremy, use the displacement map from the message number 17 and the setting from the Frog alien, the setting of the dog was more for another effect of fur not really for cats... :) cath

I took the texture in #17 and used pattern maker to make a 3000 X 3000 map. But then I couldn't see the settings in #18 so I used the same ones as #1.

DefaultGuy ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2004 at 11:25 AM

Papa, You probably did this already, but make sure the displacement setting in Render Option is set to the same value in the Material Room. That's usually the culprit.

ok here for you new one, try with this.. change only the colors of the Alernate diffuse and diffuse color also new displacement map,you can use this one as is without to rescale it to on new 3000x3000

here some carton look with displacement.. as you see the poser4 render was not that cool and I don't used anything else as in the firefly, the light shaders can create really cool effects also the Alternate diffuse is amazing that I used for the character and for the ground of the scene.. also the smooth polygons option is great for the old low poser models..

What's been working for me is to use the Cellular node with all the defaults, with a scale of .01. Here's a Snow Baby with just that, and setting the material colors, highlights, and ambient up to get a white fur effect.

Mec4D ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2004 at 12:05 PM

you can use it is no problem, but with image you have more control over the displacement maps as with Cellular node, some surface need more that only tiled noises.. so for outift it is ok, but if you try to make longer and shorter fur you can't use this quick option.. so you will limited with your work..

..then I started to work on colloring effects. Here's a soft fur example in red.

Thanks. I used the same map as #17 only I had forgotten to put the displacement setting in the render options and then go to a higher production render.

pdxjims ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2004 at 12:13 PM

Here's the settings for soft red fur. I used the color ramp twice. The first one sets only the specular color. The second sets the diffuse, ambient, translucense, and reflection colors. Both use the original cellular bump/displacement map for the input value. The only real problem with the cellular node (or any tiled texture), is the tendency to look to even and squared off. A high density, ramdom alpha mapping for the bump/displacement would give a more natural effect.

as always. Celluar displacement is only good for very even displacement. If you want a more pronounced version, a good map is better. Combining a good map with a gradient in Photoshop or other program can give some very interesting effects. This pic is of Catherina's displacement map with an gradient overlay.

Mec4D ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2004 at 1:00 PM

you see you can do more with... control it as you wish displacement maps are used not only for fur but also for morph and deformation, you can create a displacement map that will simulater parts of hair or a big nose or lips or just muscle, what is so great about is that displacement maps working fanstastic on very low models.. and today are used more that ever before to speed the work of the creators with a click of the mouse.. now go to redner a fur using hair room .. will take forever not to think about animation, when I made a test the rendering speed was the same as before so very cool..

Woo Hoo! Now we're playing! I just drove 60+ US miles to the second nearest Borders Books (the closest one to me is only 3 miles away) to grab the 3D World Complete Collection 2 publication. The one close to my house had one copy but the accompanying DVD was ripped off. Let me tell you, it was worth the drive. You better get it quick because they are going fast. If you miss out you'll have to order it from the UK. When I got home, I got this surprise! Thanks again, for this map, Cath!

I used to mix both the shader and the hair room (you have to put very little hair) to make another kind of effect. Here is an example... If only the shader would respond to some dynamics, like sasquatch in Lightwave, that would be awsome!

Mec4D ( ) posted Sat, 31 January 2004 at 5:10 PM

That is cool Nef, very good idea of you, I tested it yesterday already! TOP I made test with animation this look funny not exact as expected on the dynamic clothes.. Lightwave works better with this for sure.. maybe thye think about in the new version?

Thanks Cath!:) Just remember to use very low segments...and also turn the shadow off ONLY for the hair. You may keep it, it depends on the effect you want to achieve! Neway, have fun playing! ;) Hugz sweet Cath!

I was just telling Anton about an idea of having the material zone for the scalp actually covering the entire hair region. Then displacement mapping could be used for hair.
