Subject: a transparency question

Hi folks. Is there a method to make a layer gradually transparent in Photoshop? I do this easily with a built in tool when I use Photopaint 11, but dont know how it is done in PS. It is really the only reason I still use corel software at all. For that one tool! Anyhow, I really need some pointers... Thanks-Ryan-

Yes. When you gou look at your layer there will be an opacity setting. Play with it. It ranges form o to 100%, 0 being totally transparant (invisible) to 100% being totally opaque.

I know about that way, this is more what I was wanting to know....To fade out the layer from a certain point in that layer...like in the image above. Thanks-

Ahhh okay. There are likely several ways to go about this. What comes to mind first is to apply a custom gradient (make it how it will best contol how you need the transparency to be modulated) and apply it to a opacity mask. Then adjust it's opacity level over top of the layer you want to affect.

It's really as easy as 1, 2, 3 1. create a mask (the circle in the square symbol) 2. select the gradient tool (which looks like a, well, gradient) 3. pull it from left to right, or otherwise, in the mask

If you just want a graduated selection, use the Quickmask (Q key) and use a black to clear grad. Switch Quickmask off and you can paint into it or make a layer mask.
