Subject: Lighting Effects

Robo2010 ( ) posted Fri, 09 April 2004 at 1:17 PM · edited Sat, 18 January 2025 at 11:00 AM

I have been searching and also made my own light effects. What I am trying to get is daytime lighting effects as though if the character is standing outside at the beach on a Sunny day. Been struggling at this for days. I come close, but find other parts of the body is dark, then I have to light that part, that effects other areas and shadows. I keep playing with the colors (lights)to help with the situation. Anyone know where I can find a lighting effect like if the character is outside, on a sunny day, then also a cloudy day?

I know that there is something in the freestuff called "Renderupgrade" that I've used to make great sunny day pics. As for cloudy - maybe you can get the renderupgrade and tone it down a little? Jack

I found the freebie on the site, but when I press on to download, I get a parent directory. When I press on Parent Directory, I am lead to the persons website, then download, I end up back to the parent directory. I kept going in circles. I dunno what to say about it.

Simpicity is often the key to outdoor lighting, IMO. Use one overhead infinite light for the sun. Set the intensity to around 50% and whack the shadow map up to 1024. Use 4 or so infinite lights at around 20%, scattered around the "equator" for fill in lighting. If you need to add more, remember to turn down the intensity of all your lights unless you want an over exposed look. Use white lights and turn off the shadows on everything but the "sun". I've never rendered a cloudy day scene so I couldn't really tell you how to do that one. At a guess, I'd say to make the shadow intensity lower and more washed out and generally darken all the lights, maybe adding a little yellow in there.

Robo2010, there's three available downloads if you do a search for the renderupgrade file - get the one titled "Poser 3,4,5 Renderupgrade" and it'll download. The other two do just what you described. Jack

Runtime dna has the free poor mans hdri lighting sets that would be great for outdoor scenes although I havent actually tried them yet.

You could also try RDNA free Sun Lights set. Specifically designed for what you have in mind I imagine.

Robo, you might want to check the Shadow setting for each light that's set to cast shadows. A setting of 1.0 will produce the darkest shadows and settings less than 1.0 will produce lighter shadows. If shadows on areas of your subject appear to be too dark, try lowering the Shadow value on the light(s) that's casting the shadow(s). This might give you the result you're looking for without making the scene more complex and take longer to render with the addition of more lights. Nukem
