THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: So is there, or isn't there gonna be a B6?

This is kinda depressing to me. I feel kinda sad to see that bryceformac.com hasn't given any news lately. Does anyone know what's the status on Bryce 6? Or is there a status to look forward to at all? Vue's kung fu is gaining much power! I'm not really holding my breath but I hope something happens. There's always hope? Right? Hmmm?

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 1:27 PM

If you ask me there realisicly never was a status other then "let's just dream it happens". I hate to bring bad news, but I think we have to just face it and see that there's not gunna be any B6. And if there will be one it'll never be any time soon.

Look, I don't know the antiqity of the paintbrush but I understand that it's still a viable tool for creating art. I'd venture that as long as there's a platform to run it on, Bryce5 will render on...

AgentSmith ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 2:49 PM

Lol, exactly ddruckenmiller, exactly. I think we can almost guarantee one assumption; As long as Corel owns Bryce, there will be no Bryce 6. (Yet, even that could change IF/when Corel can do a great financial turnaround.) I wouldn't worry too much about VueFu. Although, Vue and Bryce are uncannily VERY much alike....they still have great differences in their GUI and what their renders look like. So, I believe there is still room for new Bryce users, especially sonce Bryce 5 is so inexpensive. Bryceformac is great because it does still give everyone hope. I mean, there are a lot of us who have it, this just kinda puts hope into something real. (as real as the internet can get) New Bryce, old Bryce, no more Bryce...I'll still keep using mine. Yeah, thats the spirit! :) I still get questions on when im going to switch to C4D entirely, and the answer is...never really. C4D is a great compliment, but can never replace Bryce completely. Theres just something about the app.

People over at 3D commune also talked about Bryce 6. One of them said that she might try something. I pointed her towards bryceformac.com, to pool the resources with Scott Richardson. I don't know what happened afterwards, their search is even worse than the one here. :-)

Honestly, I've tried Vue 4 but never really got comfortable with it. I don't think I'll ever be able to leave Bryce, it does have the friendliest GUI i've used in a 3d app. I'm still using B5 but I'm always be hopeful for a B6. Just can't believe Corel didn't see the immense potential of it, not to mention the loyal following it has.

Incarnadine ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 4:18 PM

I've still got a soft spot for it even if most of latest works are C4D.

Quest ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 4:20 PM

Do as I do, just rename the Bryce 5 desktop icon to read "Bryce 6". 8/

That's a rather interesting link AS. Thanks!

That Wenger link is a legit post, and not just something Drac is spoofing on Digital Freewriters, right?

Rayraz ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 4:43 PM

I think the link is old though, might not be accurate info anymore.

Doc Mojo posted to the Bryce E-mail list that he's still trying to get Bryce. Apparently Corel is making money on the $80 Bryce PC version and has no plans to sell (or update it) till they soak the market for all it's worth. Here's a follow up E-mail:

"Doc, this is very good to hear. Are you thinking of making a
MojoWorld-Bryce hybrid, a bit of each, as a possible product? And, will it have a Terrain Editor, Sky Lab, Materials Editor, DTE, etc.?"
Doc:
That would be the plan. Slip the MojoWorld engine under the hood of the Bryce UI.

"How long do you think they will hold it back before selling: months or years?"
Doc:
We figure that Corel should give it up within a year or so. But who
knows... :-)

Doc aint ever going to get the code from Eric...Eric has already stated that he will be developing SUPER BRYCE in the near future...Go to his site and read up on what he has been saying...Scotts Developement team is also going to be trying to join forces with Eric's Company to see this become a reality....So I wouldnt count it out yet...I have been told that I will be Betatester when this happens,So I am very much looking forward to this... BTW Eric still retains all rights to the code in Bryce...Metacreations and Corel and now Vector are only Leaseing the rights so they DO NOT OWN THE CODE...Eric Does...I think after Artmatic was up and running and the Profits were coming in he said something about Bryce... Just Erics Welcome page may be some good reading for some...

ddruckenmiller ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 9:16 PM

That was worth the trip Brian. Provided a nice, image-based historical perspective for me. (I just found this Bryce thing five months ago...)

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 9:25 PM

Although I've been trying for months and months to spend enough time in Lightwave to actually RENDER something, I find myself returning frustrated to the Bryce scene every day. I use Bryce 4 at work, and 5 at home, and in conjunction with my last real expenditure (Rhino) I think I've still got a few years of exploration left. I've used thousands of apps over the years, but not any single one has had the "replay" value of Bryce. Here's to Bryce 6 : Game of the Year Edition...!

foleypro ( ) posted Mon, 03 May 2004 at 9:33 PM

I too pray that it does become a reality and especially if all the things we wanted over the last 2 years is put in...Like Particals,Better renderer,Low poly modeler with exports to favorite Model format like Obj ect,Able to import Animations and Scene's from Poser,Max,Truespace,Maya and Lightwave...I also wanted the ability to export into gaming formats too,With full skeleton import and export...Ahhhh to be one with Bryce Pro....

I truly think Corel has no idea what they had by aquiring Bryce. They didn't know what it was, so they threw it in the trash...Very Sad..Now Imagine the day that Micro$oft gets their hands on it....

pauljs75 ( ) posted Tue, 04 May 2004 at 1:51 AM

I think Adobe could make better use of it than M$. LOL! Regardless, it would still get priced beyond reason if that were the case. What would really be cool is if Jasc ever decided to add something 3D to their portfolio. Not likely, but at least they'd keep the price reasonable. Features that'd be cool if there ever was a Bryce 6: Sim-City like terrain generation option. Boolean mesh generation allowing model export. Imports of mesh morphs and animations.

If Microsoft had Bryce, the next Windows upgrade wouldn't work with Vue, Maya, CD4, etc. :^)

FoleyPro- Eric doesn't own code he didn't write and he hasn't written code for Bryce since 1995 when he *finished* SuperBryce - which was to be MAC Bryce 3 (never released). Everything written after that (as well as all the code written by HSC/MC employees which Eric was not) is now owned by Corel/Vector. Releasing SuperBryce as it is would be a step back for Bryce, as well as Mac only - it would also be competition for Eric's Voyager app. My take was that Eric would only do that if Bryce was completely orphaned and the TE, ME, DTE rights returned to his control. In the thread link above Doc states: "Eric Wenger and I have spoken about working together to take Bryce to the next level and beyond." Best; Dan

Hi Perdith; I'm not sure exactly how you join, but the Bryce Group home page is at the link above. This used to be the official MC Bryce list but was moved to Yahoo during the "troubles". Best; Dan

foleypro ( ) posted Tue, 04 May 2004 at 9:08 PM

Dan that is way Cool...I am glad that was cleared up...When you say orphaned...And revert back...So he does own the Rights...Right?At least to certain aspects of Bryce?Like the DTE,TE,ME...And Vector is only leasing then and do not own the code...Who owns it then....?
