Subject: POSER STARTUP TIME.... LONGER WITH A BIG RINTIME ?

jfv ( ) posted Tue, 13 July 2004 at 9:13 AM · edited Tue, 26 November 2024 at 9:47 PM

Hi, I have a big runtime (about 8GB) and poser is SO LONG to start... If I switch MY BIG rintime wih a back up of the Small original runtime, Poser start up like a rocket.... Do you have a trick for faster loading app with a big runtime ? Can I change something in the prefs ? Does Poser Check all the Runtime files on start up ? If yes, can it be stop? Do wou have performance tricks ? Btw I run a DUAL G5 with 2.5 GB OF ram and 1000MHZ bus, so the machine is not an issue ! Thanks

LOL Your runtime is SMALL compared to mine! If you're using P5 there's a tutorial by Netherworks over at Poser Pros on how to get rid of the Content Paradise which helps speed up loading and working. Sorry I don't have the direct url to the tut but it's in the forum there.

If you are running Poser 5, then try this; create a runtime folder called 'null runtime', do not install any content in it at all, and link it into P5. Get into the habit of changing to that null runtime every time you shut down. Poser -does- read all the active libary content on start up, so if you have it read empty libraries, it starts very quickly. Then just change to the runtime you want.

For P4, you can pull this same trick if you use P-Booost by Hogwarden. You just create empty folders in each library category, mark it so you know it is empty, and switch to those libraries before you start Poser (you only really -need- to do this for the Character, Pose, and Prop libaries. The others simply do not have enough in them to be a drag). The nice thing about P-Booost is that you can change those active libraries while Poser is not running; the only caveat here is to make sure those empty libraries aren't selected when you install new content. P-Booost directs content installation to the active libraries, so you could get things into places you didn't want them... (oops. You use a Mac; never mind about the P-Booost trick...)

BTW, be careful with CorrectReference. I had it trash some files - it lost the texture maps. This was a while ago, so maybe that's no longer a problem.

I would also recommend using a utility by madz called TransPoser. I think you can get it here.

It works with P3DO Explorer (also in Free Stuff) so that you can browse your various Poser files (cr2, pz2, etc etc) and send them directly to Poser. Way cool..

Bad texture references are not an issue when loading Poser. They only become an issue when you try to load the cr2, pz3, pp2 etc that has the bad reference in it. My Runtime is 35 GB, takes about 2 minutes to load. Doesn't worry me since I don't close Poser until I'm finished anyway, so waiting once a day is OK. With a single runtime I have everything at my fingertips all the time. I would NEVER ever use a utility that took out any files, NEVER. Not in Poser, not in Windows, not anywhere. I do that kind of stuff manually if at all. Never automatically. :] Fish

Thanks for the Tip Dale!

You're welcome! I wondered myself what would happen if P5 read an empty folder; it didn't even blink....just started in 15 seconds.... ;) And Fish, Correct Reference is configurable. What it does is trace the file pathnames, and list all that are incorrectly referenced. That includes misspellings (and Ghod are there misspellings!), extension mismatches (you find all the .bum references, f'r instance). You can allow it to automatically fix issues, and it does...but only within very narrow bounds. Then it spits out a list of errors outside the bounds and gives you your options. Or you can set it for full manual, and it will just catalog and list the incorrect references. It's a royal bitch to run the first time with a multi-gig runtime just due to the size, but once you do it that first time, it gets very quick to repair any errors found from new installs. But like any repair program, you can tell it do delete something and it will do it....

I recently noticed I was having a slower than normal startup time for Poser. I keep all my scenes in a pz3file folder in my runtime. I had accidently placed 3 shortcut files (links) to pz3 files in that folder which I had subsequently deleted. When I found those links and deleted them my load time was under 15 seconds - before over a minute. So perhaps Poser is checking files and their links on startup?
