THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Creating fiery lava/acid type material (need help)

dvd_master ( ) posted Thu, 04 November 2004 at 9:13 PM · edited Fri, 24 January 2025 at 4:36 AM

Can anyone give suggestions (or point to) good materials for burning lava, or bright acid, or something that looks painful to fall into? I've tried various materials, and none of them seem to come out good. I can use any help you got.

I know there are a few downloadable ones out there but making something procedural shouldn't be too hard. Try using random or parametric space instead of object or world space as a texture mapping mode. If you need detailed DTE help then ask AS or Drac or Bryster or Ornlu. If you need something painful to fall on, how about arranging cones in a sort of "Prince of Persia" death trap array?

Because of my overwhelming boredom, I've cooked you up a few. Heres a nasty green acid texture I've just concoted.

Note random texture mapping mode.

Here 'tis in wonderful surface of the sun mode.

Nice. Can you send me the MAT? I don't want to sound lazy, but the DTE and I aren't that good of friends yet.

MoonGoat ( ) posted Thu, 04 November 2004 at 10:49 PM

OK i got it exported to my MAT folder, all I need is your email address and you got it. Though I would suggest you spend some play time in the DTE.

This is very good fun to experiment with. Here's one I came up with - there were several steps, screenshots in next couple of posts.

Step 1 was to create a cube for the lava, and apply a basic wavy material. In the DTE I changed the colours of the material to various reds and yellows, and messed with the phase, noise. I don't know what I'm doing in the DTE either, so I just click and drag at random!

Step 2, I duplicated the lava cube, raised it upwards a fraction, and converted it to a radial light. Then I tinkered with the light settings until the results looked OK.

pogmahone ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2004 at 2:02 AM

might have looked better if I'd increased the intensity of the light, and used linear falloff. Also, the colour isn't that convincing, a darker, more intense red would have been better.

Here's some fire, DVD master. It's not a single material, but two, and if you want it, let me know...

Here's a fierylava-ish texture, in case you might be able to use it :)

dvd_master ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2004 at 3:25 PM

Completly awesome, thanks for going out of your way to upload screen captures. I'll definitely work off this. Is there a good way to make it glow? I'm thinking of squishing a light and making it visible, but if anyone knows a better way...

Rayraz ( ) posted Fri, 05 November 2004 at 4:29 PM

you could use a cube or a sphere or something with an additive fuzzy material for creating a glow, that should render faster then a volume visible light I think.

Yes much better to do some kind of volumetric material wherever it can substitute a light.

Here's the same setup as above, but the converted light has been changed to 'ranged'. I plonked in a sphere just to let you see the light. Prob'ly not suitable for what you want, but I'm enjoying messing with it lol

shadowdragonlord ( ) posted Sun, 07 November 2004 at 8:39 AM

I think it looks pretty cool, Pog... Nice work!

Don't know why I didn't just use the preset Lava mat - maybe because I've never noticed it before! It worked out a bit better than the above texture, when converted to a light. All 'converting to light' seems to do is it substitutes a light of the same size, with the procedural texture applied as a gel. Still, pretty nifty and easy to do.....
