Subject: Feeling depressed and need an opinion....

I have been making some models with an Elf Town theme, with the crazy notion of selling them in the MP. But... then when I see the likes of the Victorian Street at DAZ3D and Whitechapel set at RDNA and... the amazing Santa's Workshop by iw43d, I feel like I am wasting my time. Would there be any place for my sort of models in the MP... would they sell, even if they were as cheap as chips..?

Yep, these will sell. You won't be merchant of the month with these because I don't see nudity, but you may make enough to buy some chips. (You could off course build in a Elf bondage basement, and they will sell much better, lol.) Hope that cheered you up.

They look sweet, nicely detailed... not everyone is going for 100% realism! You could market these for use with the cartoony santa and elf characters, and they'd be perfect! You should see the stuff I've scrapped... not half so nice as these.

pdxjims ( ) posted Mon, 06 December 2004 at 11:28 PM

Ziggy, Never sell yourself short. These have a charm all their own. As for realism, with a different texture set they'd make a perfect small town America set. I see Norman Rockwell meets Mayberry when I look at them. They look to be very modular, and that's very good. Pieces like this would be perfect for either a larger street scene or a close in shot where you need just a hint of streetfront. My only concern is timing. Can you finish them by this weekend? Christmas is less than 3 weeks away, and if you release too late you're going to miss a lot of sales. Jim

These are really quite sweet, and I think they'd do well in the store. And I agree with Jim, different textures would give different looks so don't be surprised what some adventurous texturer might turn them into! You might even want to contact your favourite texturist/s and offer them a copy in hopes of them doing something nifty :)

Ziggie, I think those are adorable! As others have stated, photoreal is not everything, whimsy is a big part of the market too.

They are unique and not at all what anyone else is doing. I'd certainly be on the list to buy them. I especially love the little shop with its revolving door. You do remarkable work...I do hope you make them available for sale.

keweljewels ( ) posted Tue, 07 December 2004 at 8:08 AM

These are adorable...and just as appealing as the others..They have their own charm. They will sell. Dont hide these from us :). They'd have appeal for Christmas cards, etc :).

Those are so cute & charming. I agree, they would sell :)

genny ( ) posted Tue, 07 December 2004 at 9:47 AM

Yup, they would definately sell.(: I can already see a whole Santa's village....not just a workshop, but if you do make a "elf bondage" basement....I am afraid I would have to pass on that one! LOL!

TheMadPainter ( ) posted Tue, 07 December 2004 at 2:02 PM

I think what everyone has said here is right..these are adorable and have great charm and have their need in the MP also. I say give it a shot, they look great to me. TheMadPainter

Ziggie - I'm not a merchant, nor much of a Poser artist; my opinion may thus hold little weight! But I don't think there's a "price of admission" to sell things in the marketplace. Thus ANY sales would be to your benefit!!
Did you ENJOY making these items, for yourself and others to see (and possibly purchase?) If so, then you're ALREADY successful. You advanced your modelling knowledge AND had fun doing it!!! As one gets older (I'm 52), one appreciates the notion that the "journey" is often more important than some (artificial) goal.
Keep up the good work and ENJOY yourself! - Ray

I have to agree with HeavyRay and all the rest. Your work is excellent. Clean. These would be perfect to create holiday gift ecards or even printed ones. You have done a wonderful job on these. And as others have mentioned, you could do addons with this pack by simply changing the textures. Beautiful work!!! :)

If the modeling is clean and charming, they should sell. If they offer something no other village has, they'll do better. "Elfridges" is a nice start on punning names. "The North Pole Barbershop Quartet" (with 4 poles outside) and 4 chairs inside is an idea. "Rudy's Hoof and Hay" with reindeer stuff instead of western tack is another. Out here in the West, they tend to put large plastic/resin palominos on top of feed stores to indicate that they sell cowboy necessities. Like barberpoles and pawnshop balls it hearkens back to a less literate time... or perhaps visibility from a distance. Back to how to make this product line a product line... and collectable. People will probably want enough to make a street unless they are doing simple shots against one building. Therefore, you need a theme to anchor it. Simple "Victorian Christmas" is probably not going to do it alone, since there are already Victorian Christmases. Same with "Cartoon Christmas". Being able to tag onto already existing lines will add value to yours... unless you want to make a whole lot of accessories, it will help if the elf or santa or sleigh that artists already own will also go with your suite. However, you may want to add your own unique quirky twist. Recognizibility helps sales! Especially since people don't always credit the makers. There is a place in Sweden where you can go to visit Santa at home. It has a hotel carved into solid ice. Everything from the front desk to the beds. (Guests sleep in down bags on top of reindeer pelts and are quite toasty.) The hot beverage made from fermented berries might have something to do with it. Many northern cities have ice villages and ice castles, all lighted nicely. Even P4 has a way to do glass, but Poser 5 has better materials, so making an ice village is an idea... and one that I haven't seen done. Another direction that you can go is a modern Santa's Village tourist trap. (I noticed your gas station.) This sort of theme park would have reindeer rides (or petting zoo), ways to watch "elves" at work, and shops in which to buy the toys and cookies. They operate all year. I think there is even one here in California. To do something like this, you'd need a kiosk to sell tickets, and a couple of attractions, in addition to the little houses, stores, and workshops. Anyway, that's two directions, and I'm sure you can think of others. :) Carolly

thanks to everyone for your comments and opinions.

Carolly: I have already considered most of the points you mentioned.

Yes I am trying to come up with a theme... the one I had in mind was Elf Town... but... the buildings will be quite versatile. Take away the snow, icicles and crismouse trees... replace them with sand and cactuses, cacti... errr... prickly plants... and different textures and you have a midwest type town.

I am planning on doing quite a few more buildings so that street/town scenes can be set up. Add ons... probably freebies, will be telegraph poles/wires, fire hydrants, etc.

I had thought about the theme park type idea as that might give the models a chance after Christmas.

problems are: I am quickly running out of time for the Crismouse theme. Time that should be spent on modelling is being spent on trying to texture them which I find more time consuming.

I can build, but I sure can't paint..!

Pic shows how the models look together... a little imagination and its easy to see how a streetful would look :-)

here is a qwik shot of another building in the pipeline.

Picture it in red, green and gold and it shouldnt look too bad.

Btw... if there are any texturers out there with spare time on their hands and who might like to collaborate on this range of models. Please get in touch.. I need help.

I definitely like the Elfridges model - I hope the revolving door does revolve. The first one I'm not as fond of but I'm not quite sure why. The ice cream shop with new textures would be quite useful. I do like the ice cream try you're showing, though, as is. Cheers!

ziggie ( ) posted Wed, 08 December 2004 at 1:26 PM

yes... the doors do revolve, but... there is no insides as such. Just a backdrop pic on a 3 sided box. Actually it looks good in close up.. kinda Tardis effect :-) ziggie

Glad you are feeling better Ziggie...more great work ic :). All the pieces shown I have good uses for, as I do with most building type models :)

My 2 cents worth Ziggie: I think they're adorable! You make excellent models :) Sounds like you have a lot of interest here.....I would definitely give it a shot!
