Subject: Adding Ram to your rendering

I don't know if anyone has updated their computer with more ram. I have a 2.80 Celeron, with 512mb of ram. 80 gig of Hard drive. I'm thinking of upgrading my ram to 1024mb of ram. What percentage increase of rendering speed would you be looking at. 5-10-15% faster renders. Thanks Brint

I'm going to hazard a guess at between 10 and 15% depending on your system's confugration overall.

Um, I think it would be 12.3872645% faster renders ..... approximately. ;=]

More 'RAM' will have a minimal effect on render speed. What will have the most impact is a faster 'CPU' and 'FSB' - sticking with the acronymic portrayal... Plus, you'd be amazed at what a disk defragment can do to overall system performance, especially if your boot drive is in desparate need. Of course, 1 to 2GB of memory is never a bad thing. ;)

What is acronymic portrayal? I Googled it, but got no relevent results.

Also, kuroyume and everyone, I hope you will visit a new thread in the tech forum on 'optimal poser rig." click the above link to go there.

More RAM can make your rendering 0-10 times faster - depending on whether or not RAM is your current limit. If you have enough RAM to hold the whole scene in, including all textures, adding more RAM will help nothing - what should your computer put in that extra space? But, if your scene doesn't fit entirely in computer's RAM, it will constantly need to read and write parts of it to the hard drive, and during that time the rendering functions will have to wait. Adding RAM will then make that HD activity less frequent or completely disappear, thus speeding up rendering.

Acronymic: adjective form of acronym (also: acronymous). Portrayal: The act or process of depicting or portraying. Therefore, the act of depicting with the use of acronyms, i.e.: RAM. :) Good thread link, operaguy! Robert

Poser 5 is believed to have some problems with using virtual memory -- transferring stuff between RAM and disk -- and certainly slows down a huge amount. I suspect that some of the lock-ups I have had may bave been illusory, and the program was chugging along in the background while nothing much appeared to happen. My own experience suggests that 1024MB will be noticeably better then 512MB, and that much RAM should be considered a practical minimum. 512MB works, but I know I keep hitting the limits.

Well I'm going to add the ram, but I also am going to get a DVD+RW along with 120 Gig HD. I have used up most of my 80 gig HD, so I'll just use one HD as slave and it is effecting my couputers performance. Thanks for all the info.
