Seraphira ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 6:33 PM

Attention everyone: I have some very very upsetting news Just recently someone sent me a nasty virus and I lost everything all my work is gone including kaimira. I'v never been so upset in my life that someone would do that to someone? Also just my luck the backups of kaimira are also corrupted. "me Cries". I will redo Kaimira and better then ever, I am so sorry guys I am so sorry. :( Sera

randym77 ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 6:42 PM

That's terrible! I'm so sorry. Whoever sent it to you probably didn't realize they were sending it. If it was really them to begin with. Most viruses are "spoofed" these days. They hide their origins, taking e-mail addresses off the infected person's hard drive. You weren't an intentional target, in all likelihood.

DCArt ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 6:46 PM

Oh my, Sera, first the stress of your uncle, and then the stress of losing everything! Oh no, oh no, oh no! You know what? Take a little break for yourself first. You've been working so hard, and you need to spend a little time with YOU too! We can wait a bit longer, we just want to see you happy and rested. (hugs)

Sera, that is Terrible news on top of your family health burdens :-(. I feel for your situation, having experienced the loss of significant work/effort/time/creative thought through accident personally. As you have inspired us, we must now inspire you and reward you with our patience and support. Do not risk your own health through sleep deprivation when under stress. Kaimira will arrive when she's ready and I'm sure we will appreciate her all the more for the delay. GeoffIX

A nasty pox on virus writers! Sera, take some time to sleep and a walk in the sunlight. You probably need to lower your stress levels with illness in the family as well as computer woes. Then, take your computer to an expert and see what can be recovered. Carolly

Hi Sera, often when bad things happen some good comes out of it too. All the learning you did as you were making is a valuable amount of knowledge and skill. you've learnt a lot about making a poser person and the next one you makewill be even better, i promise you. anway it would have been a bad time to relesase her. there's new vue and [oser 6 that people have just spent their money on, as well as the new p6 characters, so we are better off waiting for kai. don't rush her - take your time. we're all supportive and i promise to buy her when she comes out! love esther

dlfurman ( ) posted Wed, 16 March 2005 at 9:37 PM

Kaimira The Prototype was not for these machines. You may have lost this work, but the knowledge you've gained is going to stay with you. Estherau is right. Take a break. I can share with you a technique for producing ideas. Adapt this to Kaimira the Release Version. Your last creative process was like eating a meal. You've taken in everything. You chewed up modeling and learning the tools for that. Rigging, .cr2 creation and editing, the whole nine for that. This nasty virus episode is like digestion. Time for your mind to absorb, analyse and process what you've done. When you are ready to push those pixels, move the polygons, save the final .obj, pz2, .cr2 files, the creative process will be that much smoother. The finished product-Kaimira The Release Version will make you proud. We will wait.

AHHHHHHHRRRRRGGGGGG!angerdespairetc Everyone seem so calm and polite but this kind of things make me real mad. I post this scream of anger to let out the steam a little bit on the forum because if all hold out anger like this more time I'm sure your right eye is gonna pop! I was following silently this project for some time now and was hoping to see her ready in a couple of months but now the wait is going to be longer I guess. As has been said earlier maybe this nasty incident will give birth to a even much better Kaimira (now Kaimira2 or "The Kaimira daughter") if it's possible to surpass her, she was all that a poser model should be. So Sera I'm sending you my best positive vibes to you, both creative and hard work ones so you could heal after this loss and get back to the awesome work you have showed us right here with the Kaimira Project.

WAIT WAIT WAIT, Are you SURE everything is gone???????? Either just post back and say you have had professional assistance, and I mean REALLY ADVANCED HYPER PROFESSIONAL HELP to say "There is no hope." Or WAIT and give us the details....you might be suprised what can be recoverd. Even if you hard drive cannot be seen, that does NOT necessarily mean everything is gone. ::::: Opera :::::

now i see post 110 that you have reformatted. IT IS STILL NOT TOO LATE. STOP FOR ONE MOMENT. YOU MAY STILL BE ABLE TO RECOVER THE FILES..... Please advise. ::::: Opera :::::

stonemason ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 2:22 AM

Operaguy..that's what I was thinking too..there may still be a chance,I think her brother has looked over the system and deemed it unsaveable though. I spoke with Seraphira today & we think it was the Klez.H virus..would there be any chance of recovery from that one? Stefan

operaguy ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 2:53 AM

Yes, it might be retrievable. Even saving one file, such as the latest mesh, could be worth investigation. Her brother might be a professional, or might not. How did her brother make the determination? If you have phone access to her, I will give you my toll free number and she can call me if deemed worth while. Just IM me if appropriate. I am not trying to be a superhero, but that seemed like a pretty fast surrender. It depends on many things, but considering the amount of work at stake here, the counter-attack should be proportional. ::::: Opera :::::

Natolii ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 5:51 AM

I do have a question about how you are storing your backups as well. Are they being stored locally on your computer or do you have a copy off computer (Ie. Zip disk or CD/DVD rom?) A good investment would be a DVD-R/RW +/-... Even an inexpensive CD-R/RW would mean the difference between a lot of headaches. I learned that one the hard way.

jcbwms ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 6:00 AM

I found this thread via a bookmark from a friend I am sitting with. This indicates she is watching this figure closely (she has only about two dozen bookmarks, and all are recently visited). After having looked over the entire history of this figure myself (she is working on a figure herself, but obviously nowhere near this complex and I don't believe this realistic), and knowing her, I can say that both of us hope that some element of the work can be saved. Most excellent work. Gives me a mind to actually give this poser thing a go myself, instead of letting my son or friend have all the fun. I most especially like the proportioning -- those tiny heads are absurd. Anyone who has ever worked on a casting analysis knows that most television workers have heads larger than normal, inclusive of hair. Makes for a better look on a screen. My condolences, and I shall extend them as well for my friend (who has asked me not to identify her in my posts as I am somewhat embarrassing to her).

The3dZone ( ) posted Thu, 17 March 2005 at 6:04 AM

hey Opera..I speak with her through msn, chances are she's in bed at the moment, somewhere in the states. I agree the counter-attack should be proportional.. not sure what qualifications her brother has..but I'd be sending it to a tech expert just to see if there was a chance ..but also hats off to her if she's prepared to give it another go..I think I'd give up after loosing so much work, Stefan

I wish you the best of luck in continuing with Kaimira's development. Be it by finding the old mesh or starting over. If want to pursue the old mesh on your hard drive, this is a link to a forensic data recovery service in your area.

Hopefully Ryan has the work on the new site on his machine, the work the two of you put into it was very beautiful, strange but it was through this that we first came across your work :-) It's good to see that you're getting straight back into it. "It is always faster second time around" is almost a computer graphics anthem, and without the process of "creative decision" getting in the way, you'll be surprised how quickly you can bring it all back. We know how you are feeling a similar disaster on 1st Jan almost wrecked the volumes of poser6 content we were providing, one of our hardrives just decided to up and die, but fortunatly we had backups in place and only small amounts disappeared. We're pretty good at backing up our service work, it must be the fear of being sued :-) Give it a go contacting opera, some deep recovery may be possible, but ol' windows does a good job of trashing at least part of every file of any importance :( (it's like it knows) Best of luck on the rebuild from us in Ireland. Sera,

I've been watching this thread with great interest. I am very sorry to hear about the problems you had with your computer, and your loss (possible loss??) of the Kaimira. Unfortunately I was out of town when you had the problems with your system, or maybe I could have helped you get everything back. But even with re-formatting your drive, some of your files may still be recoverable (it depends on how the drive was reformatted, and where the files were on the hard drive (the physical location).

Although Klez.h is a particularly pesky virus, and spreads through your system(s) like wildfire, it's very unlikely that it made your data unrecoverable (your entire system was probably recoverable). It attaches it's self to files in your system, changes registry settings, and sends it's self to everyone in your email, ICQ, network, and really clogs up your network.

In your case, simply removing your hard drive and installing it as an additional hard drive on a protected system, scanning your hard drive to remove the virus, and making copies of your data files is all that would have been needed save everything. Although it is too late for this now, it's good information to have if you experience problems in the future. Unless your hard drive is physically dead, data is almost always recoverable.

If you you have any top notch computer shops with data recovery tools in your area, it's possible the Kaimira could be recovered from your hard drive even though it has been reformatted. Unfortunately, most local computer shops don't do data recovery, and any that do, charge a premium price for the service (the tools are expensive).

I've recovered data from un-bootable systems, unreadable data, and deleted data, and reformated drives many times over the years, so I know from personal experience that it can be done. I would offer to help, but I no longer work where I have access to software to read data off of a reformatted drive.

I'm Sorry for your loss, and sorry that I was too late to help. I'm looking forward to watching your progress on the new, improved? version.

GOOD LUCK!

Thanks thanks for helping me... Unfortantly my brother likes to format things :| sigh. I'm just gonna go lay down for a few hours it's about 12:23pm i'll be back about 2:30pm then i'll show u some goodies. I think i will be able to model her faster with the same or better results, not like before i was flying blind. But please do let me know if u guys have any ideas on getting files back from the grave. in teh mean time i'll try to get in contact with philc. Because he helped me with her cr2. If it can help: if I'm not mistaken, we have downloaded the previous (disappeared) threads part 1 to 4. With you images on them. They might serve as a reference. If you need one that is. If ever possible: get yourself a cheap second hand computer and link that one to the Internet. With an updated virus killer. And disconnect your workhorse computer from every possible source of trouble. Then the ony thing you have to fear is a crashing hard disk. I really feel sad for you, really do. I am dreaming on a project, and I intended to wait for Kaimira as she is so much better than the unimesh characters. Well, I have now more time to prepare. And K2 will be easier to create, and also most probably even better. As for the release time: I am not interested in P6 or Vue, so you can be shure you already sold one copy. don't let the changes get you down!

There is a reason why this old WIN98 box is my internet connection... and why my working computers aren't connected to it or the Internet. Bad things happen to computers when they are online. It is almost like safe sex where abstinence is about the only sure way to not get infected. Anyway, as mentioned above, unless a disk has been thoroughly and deliberately magnetized by professionals a couple of times to wipe it clean, the data is almost always recoverable. The pros can recover data even from burnt-out husks. There may be some expense, but compared to 6 months of your time? Carolly

I agree with having a 'throw-away' sys as your internet connection. My Poser sys has not and will not touch the net. That having been said....I am very impressed with the combination of XP Pro SR2+all patches combined with SpyBot innoculation. Since I started with a clean install 6 weeks ago on my NetPuter, I have had NO adware infections, no popups, no virusus and no hijack attempts of any kind get thru. ::::: Opera :::::
