Subject: Waves and shores

I'm working on a cartoonish island pic with a round shore/beech.I never have managed to make good shores with waves, and cant seem to find any good tutorial. Anyone have any great links or suggestions? :D

Arguably the hardest thing to do in Bryce, in my opinion. You have to do it with terrains, somehow, and the trick is to blend them together with teh shore and surf with postwork.

Aye, shores and waves are easy in Bryce... I assume you're using a terrain to make your island? Simply duplicate your terrain, flatten it out vertically so that it's not QUITE flat, then stretch it on the X and Z so that it's a bit wider than your initial island(s). Then, copy and paste your water texture to this new, wave terrain!

If you want more detail, go into the Terrain Editor and add some basic noise to the image map. You may want to turn up the source resolution for this part...

If you want some spray, or foam, simply duplicate your wave terrain object and run a different texture on it, then increase it's vertical height only slightly so that it pokes above your water terrain.

Or, you can just use multiple small terrains along the edges of your island, and the beaches. Use a sparkly "Blend Transparency" material and boom, instant wave spray! I used this method in my scene, "Shadow's Wall", and in many other scenes. I used the previous method in my scene "Temple of the Damned".

If you need more help, post us a screenshot so we can get more specific? I disagree with Drac on this one, it's not remotely hard, nor is postwork required at all...

Thanx kimpe for the link, and the usefull tips lordstormdragon. As soon as I get off work I'm going for a try :D Thing is the island is actually made out of metaballs, I will post a screenshot when I get off work...if they dont chain me to my desk and force me to work all night :( Aye I remember "Shadow's Wall", great water there indeed. I have managed to make waves the way you explain Lordsofdragon, thou the shoreline seems always to get messed up. Oh no not a nother customer....bbl hehe

Great info. Sorry I would ask the same question you asked it for me. Learn soemthing new every day.

If your island is made of metaballs, and you want to use the terrain-at-once technique, simply switch to the isometric overhead view and zoome out until your island fits the screen, adjust the render size to 1024x1024 or 2048x2048, and render as an Object Mask. Import the resulting image back into Bryce as a terrain map, and boom, instant matching edges... Also, you can of course use this technique to make rolling waves all day in Photoshop. Then re-import the image into the Terrain Editor and boom, you're the man.

I agree with those above. One of the hatdest things i have tried to do in bryce was forming waves for a rough sea. The sea you see in this image was done using a terrain which fortunately for me one of the kind artist on this forum sent to me. I just raised the waves a bit then duplicated it and used a water mat which i tweak to form the whites of the waves...By the way this image is still being worked on because i'm just not happy with it yet :)

I have opinions of my own -- strong opinions -- but I don't always agree with them.

I've made a series of wave/beach tutorials that might help.

It has to be terrains I'm afraid. The terrain editor is not the easiest tool to master,I can adjust the greyscale image easier in PSP sometimes which is easily done by copy/paste from one to the other.
