"What 3D Program Should I buy?" Not one person here can really tell you what's best for you, as everyone has their own taste in workflow. Try the demo or learning edition of the program you're interested in, this is the only way to find out which programs you like.
I thought this was a generic modeling forum where objects are displayed for any 3D modeler to use/understand.

Oh ok. I'm curious what apps people work fast with.

"For example, in the Post Your Challenge Entry thread no-0ne mentions the App used, which I feel is highly important to the viewer." Ah but that might influence the voting!? Shonner, both Wings and Silo are very fast, particularly for organic modelling. I'd say Wings has the edge in workflow but Kemal would probably disagree lol!
at the moment blender, works as fast as wings but like that too.
for
some free stuff i made
and
for almost daily fotos
Wings3D, Bryce. There's some other programs, but they really don't do any modeling.

Dunno, BazC, could not wrap my head arround wings3D, was not how my brain operates, I like freedom of open surfaces in SILO, focus on edge modeling and ease of working with >200000 polys with no visible slowdown, took me one hour of testing demo to realize, that was what I was looking for, some ppl are the other way around, go figure...
I know that wings3D is free, but feeling that you found what you were looking for, is priceless ! :D
Workflow in SILO is unmatched, according to proffesionals (not my opinion, but I have to agree to that:P) Cheers :D

I never got an ebot on this one. Sorry for the late reply. This forum is indeed meant to be less for program specific Q&A and more for the general modeling, workflow, aesthetic of each project posted. The challenges (which to date have been laughable...my fault) don't really require the app to be listed because it's not about that. Hand me a copy of Maya and I'm lost (sorry, it's the truth) hand me a copy of MAX, Rhino or WINGS and I can run circles around most folks. A program is only as good as the artist using it and their understanding of it. We could list the apps but without taking the time to learn them, I don't see how that list would be any more helpfull than just a general rundown of what folks use.
Having said that,
I use Rhino, Wings, Max, Silo and I'm trying to take a few hours a month to learn XSI, which I'm doing a lot faster than when I tried Maya. EDIT: And Baz is right. I personally find WINGS' workflow superior to Silo's, even though Silo offers more modleing options. Wings really puts things at your fingertips and the tools are mapped logically. Some of the shortcuts in Silo's default layout leaves me scratching my head. I mean X to connect and T to turn off the manipulator? Hello...that's silly.

Hopefully I'll get to add some more tools on my belt. I might be learning Maya or Lightwave in the future, but my school hasn't made up their mind yet. This is the second time that the virtual modeling class has been pushed back. At this rate, I might graduate with my bachelors before I get to cover anything 3D computer graphics related. :S Also it's still neat to see what app was used, even in a general modeling forum. That way you can get an idea of what the general method/workflow for a particular model is. Heck-- I even drop into forums for software I don't have or might not even be interested in using (not enough time to learn or adjust at the moment) just so I can see the cool stuff other people are doing.

Yeah I think the Silo shortcuts are chosen so similar commands are close together (like vert, edge, face and object modes) whereas in Wings they're chosen to sound right (e for edge, v for vert, f for face and b for body). It makes Wings shortcuts easy to remember but not necessarily ergonomically efficient. Both methods have their merits IMO! :o) Besides it only takes a few minutes to remap Silos shortcuts to the Wings keys you're familiar with, the toolset is VERY similar. Silo also has a few superb workflow advantages like being able to map double click to a command is superb. I have double left click assigned to edge loop select and shift click assigned to edge ring select, very slick! On the other hand Silo's edge loop select isn't as predictable as Wings, it doesn't always select a true edge loop which can be irritating. Also a great tip from TJNYC (I think) assign smooth (not subdivide) to mouse wheel down, it acts almost like a paintbrush smooth! Anyway, this is getting very app specific so I'll shut up! :o) - Baz
Honestly, if it was a choice between Maya and Lightwave, I'd pick Lightwave. I've never used either, but I have very great respect for Lightwave. ROUGHNECKS: STARSHIP TROOPERS CHRONICLES was done in Lightwave even before FINAL FANTASY came out, and it still has some of the best CG work I've ever seen in it.
Talent is God's gift to you. Using it is your gift to God.
BazC took the words out of my mouth. its key placement for ergonomics with silo. thats why it has the funny key sets.. i remember the keys by location, not by the key designation. wings3d is free, kind of hard to knock that. but for a hundred bones, silo offers a great tool set, that usually cost's about 10X as much, and all the hoopla about workflow in silo isnt all hype, its really pretty slick. like Teyon said, its a personal preference kind of thing, that and taking the time to become proficient with your tools.
