You can't make actual translucence in Carrara. I've seen some tries at faking it, but without much success in my opinion. Patrick

I remember someone doing a movie in Carrara that had an animated candle hoping around. The wax appeared translucent near the flame. Someone here may remember it. I still have the video on my drive if you want to see it. It's a 100KB DivX avi file I can send you.

If you dig further in the archives around this time I think you will find a reference to his technique for creating the translucent effect. I think it involves an elevation or gradient shader but I'm pretty hazy on that.

Maybe it uses the Shoestring Shaders proximity shader or something like that?

You can fake some translucence effects using Lit. . . depends what you are looking for. There are several sample here of different applications. http://www.des-web.net/html/samples.html markd < disclaimer- I am Shoestring Graphics. ;-) >

Anyone remember the link to the animated hopping candle that I have saved to my drive? It's translucent effect looks much better. It was made around December of 2003.
