On the one hand it's a response to fractalinda's latest thread in the Forum (http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?ForumID=12416&Form.ShowMessage=2266750), on the other here are some statistics and opinion that can be interesting, perhaps, that's why a new thread. Dear Linda, You're absolutely right. I remember discussing similar topics a couple of years ago in other Forums (Photo or Bryce or 2D - don't remeber exactly). It's absolutely fair and normal approach! Plus one more aspect: let's turn to statistics - we have 1004 uploads (only 'Fractal Gallery" at the moment I was writing it) in 15 days that makes appr. 67 works a day. I have a very slow dial-up (max. 11 - 13 MB/hr) and physically can't even look through all the full-sized images (sometimes even thumbnails), not to mention that it's impossible for me to comment on all I like. So pardone moi, my friends, if I miss some of Your works. And I look through other galleries as well, that makes 9062 :15 = 604 images per day (just for comparison, ArtMatic/Voyager gallery has 24 upload in latest fortnight). Btw it means Fractals are becoming more and more popular (despite new products like Artmatic appear ;-) - I remeber making that kind of 'investigation' in 2002 - Fractals were significantly less popular. The tendency You mention is inevitable and on the one hand the mathematical parameter that can somehow reflect the real artistic merit is K='number of comments'/'number of views'. On the other hand most talented and outstnding Artsits will always atract more attention and interest of viewers, who are not inclined to write anything or don't know how to express themselves. Rather often I see a real stunner and only a couple of comments, so what - I'll remember the Artist and visit him the next time I'm @ R'sosity. Of course, nothing can measure the real merit - the number of Artworks that the authot of the most expensive painting ever bought on Earth - Vincent Van Gogh managed to sell during his short life. So let's forget about maths (but leave it for fractals ;-). The only thing that isn't mentioned here is the following - not all of us upload daily But we more often comment. And up till now (in a couple of days ther'll be my third anniversary, though I'm fiddling with fractals for two months only) I don't even know all the fractalists of Renderosity. People more often comment. Their comments (not only the mere fact of the comment but what they say) let me know of their existance! And depending on what they say I go (or don't go) to their gallery. With kindest regards, -Anthony.
