Subject: P6 SR1 is a TOTAL disaster for me - can I go back to plain P6?

FishNose ( ) posted Fri, 10 June 2005 at 4:40 PM · edited Wed, 25 December 2024 at 8:28 PM

SR1 is a massive disappontment. A stable Poser6 (well, reasonably so) has now becone a big black hole. I can't render, the cursor disappears all the time, endless waits for simple tasks, File menu greys out so I can't save, Poser just vanishes sometimes, it refuses to cancel busted renders, etc etc etc. AAAAARRRGGHHHHHHH After one unsuccessful render and a forced 'End Task', some files got messed up on my boot drive and the PC forced disk check and rebooted 3 times in a row. Ick. Before I did SR1, my Poser6 was OK, just the usual junk with not liking big files and so on.... Extremely frustrating and disappointing. Not even a basic P4 render works. I have Win2K SR4 on a standard Intel P4 PC w 1GB & Geforce Ti 4600, latest drivers. Poser is not installed in default folder - it's on a different drive, has always been. Ever since P2. And it was fine a week ago. I haven't installed anything else new of any significance, I have the same old virus checker etc that I had before. :] Fish

And I have 10 Gig free on my boot drive, 3 Gig free on the Poser drive, etc. So there's no lack of space. My Runtime is enormous, but it has always been like that. I'm not running any other apps at the same time. I'm being a very good boy. I even wiped my nose! :] Fish

How did you install it? Did you extract the .exe first and then run it? Because I've heard people having problems if they ran it from inside the zip. I'm getting nothing like you mention. In fact, my libraries are opening quicker and responding better. I also turned off my AV just like in the regular installation just in case. You can back up your libraries (though I'm pretty sure they don't get erased) and uninstall and do a fresh install if you want to get rid of the update.

I would back up the runtime folder, uninstall the program and then delete the folder and registry entries. Then perform an install of P6, followed by SR1 and then copy your runtime back in. At the end of the day it's more than likely a very minor thing causing you big problems. A totally fresh and clean installation will confirm that. If you continue to get problems, send your sympons and system spec to Curious Labs who might be able to offer some advice or at the very least log the incident in case others have reported the same issues. Don't just give up, work the problem logically and see where the trail leads. Jody

1st time I installed, I had the zip/exe on one drive but installed to another and it was hellfest. P6 could not find it's own elbow. Would not save. Trashed every old PZ3 that I opened.... Hope you can find the room to copy the Runtime. Patience though...it really is worth the trouble.

I extracted the exe first - but had it on a different drive. It found the correct P6 folder immediately so everything seemed OK.... My Runtime is about 40GB :o) :] Fish

Fish, don't feel bad. I had the SAME problem. Mine went so far though as to somehow corrupt my windows shell. I still need a full reformat but fighting against that as hard as I can in the midst of readying a pack to market.

I closed my eyes and saw heaven, I opened them and the face before me was heaven on earth

How incredibly strange......and so 180 degrees opposite from my own experience with SR1.

SR1 cleared up many of the problems that I was having with P6. Sorry to hear that it hasn't gone that way for everyone.

I honestly don't know what to tell you. Other than to do as others have already suggested. Save your Runtime folders, and then do a complete delete & re-install of the program.

Perhaps try re-installing the SR1 patch on top of a fresh install of base P6. Try running the default P6 SR1 before adding your complete Runtime back in. See how that does first. If everything goes OK, then cross your fingers and copy your Runtime back in. Re-open P6 SR1 with your full runtime, and try it out again.

Hopefully, the second time will be the charm.

Hmm interesting, since installing SR1 I have experienced an increase in the load time of the programme, anyone else had this? Before SR1, P6 loaded fairly quickly, now it loads very sloooowwwllly!!!!! thefixer poser coord.

Injustice will be avenged.

Count me in too! Poser 6 ran smoothly before SR1, the only problem was the pesky memory bug when trying to render at the highest settings. Well that little annoying bug still shows up occasionally and now the program locks up when moving into the material room and setup rooms with regularity. This is extremely disappointing to lose all the work you have done grouping and boning. Once it locks up, the program has to be forcefully closed with ctl alt del, nothing else works. Here's hoping for SR2 (or SR4).

I had one major crash and had to restore my external HD. Since then, everything is running smoothly. I do beta testing and Q&A between P5 & P6 and I have not noticed any major problems beyond that first crash. Might have to do with a buggy Pz3 because I deleted most of my old ones (I keep characters saved as cr2s).

It is really amazing how the same program with the same SR(s) can act differently from one computer to the other! I didn't have many problems with P6. No memory bug... the only real problems I had was the color picker that was too jumpy and the 1pixel line around the renders. Both have been solved with SR1 and P6 is a lot faster than it was to work with. Slower to launch (a little) but works faster.
