Subject: Recommendations for pushing P6 render

Ghostofmacbeth ( ) posted Tue, 09 August 2005 at 10:32 PM · edited Fri, 19 July 2024 at 6:51 AM

I am trying to do a render that might overload P6 and I am trying to figure out the best way to make it render. I am trying to render a scene with five David's and clothes and props and need to know the best way to keep as much quality in the render but not let it choke P6. Things like buckets and pixel samples etc are a bit obtuse so I am trying to figure out what I can decrease some to make it render without loosing too much quality. Thanks.

For a scene of this complexity, I'd consider using render passes or rendering in layers, then compositing them together in post. Far less headaches that way. If that's not possible for you, then take a close look at your textures, and see if you can reduce their size, especially on figures or objects that aren't close to the camera, to make that process of the render more manageable.

I normally do that but they are fairly tight together and have a lot shadow interaction. Fortunately, they are all basically the same texture so that wont be too too much of a strain but I know it will be rough. I might have to try the passes but with the shadows I thought I would try and see if anyone had any ideas. Thanks

GOMac, Make invisible all bodyparts under clothing and any "arm or leg" out of view. Turn visible in RayTracing off on hair. Cast shadows too, if it's short hair. Try to have just one shadow enabled light. Use IBL for fill. Don't use bumpmaps unless it's really a must. In rendersettings, Try to stay above 1.00min shading rate (hair) and below 2048max texture(drop it to 1024 if you can). No filters! Preset bucket at 16. The least RayT bounces if using AO or reflects. Check use displ maps , RayT (optional) and cast shadows only All I can imagine right now,,,screenshot? It could help... Hey Maxxx!

Hi, Richard! Excellent suggestions.

I might also add that you may be able to use the "shadows only" render pass in P6 render options to help you if all else fails. It would be a little more laborious, but you could render the scene in layers without any shadows (very fast), then remove the heavy textures from the scene, turn on shadows again, and try a full pass using the "shadow only" render option. It won't alleviate all the heavy geometry, but it should allow you to finish the render without incident.

You'll want to use the "max texture size" parameter to reduce the memory usage of your textures. Large geometries themselves are usually not the problem (except when the groups in OBJs are fragmented - see the link for a description and fix), but large textures with filtering enabled eat your RAM for breakfast. Disable texture filtering and turn down the "max texture size" to something in the 512-1024 range. If you experience blurry textures then, lowering the shading rate can help, but as a rule of thumb you shouldn't need to go lower than ~0.3. If the shading rate won't fix it, try larger textures, but be aware that twice the texture size means four times as much RAM usage.

*points to the link* Check out the attached thread. We discussed bucket size, as well as textures. We even had an e-Frontier person give some very useful info on the subject. It is a long thread, but there is a lot of useful information in it. Hope this helps!

Thanks all .. I can't do a screenshot yet since I haven't actually assembled it but I was expecting problems since I had problems with three similar figures :) I will try this at lunch time.
