Subject: Ratings

Marshmallowpie ( ) posted Tue, 27 February 2001 at 5:47 PM · edited Sat, 21 September 2024 at 4:33 PM

Exactly how do you people rate images? I find it quite hard to know what is supposed to go where...like..how good is a 10/10? It seems like anything below an 8 is considered a bad rating, how can that be? I just don't quite get it, I would have thought that an average photo would be like 4-5, a good one a 6-7, and an excellent one 8-10...did I get something wrong? I hardly ever rate pictures though, because I very often change my mind about things, I'm terribly indecisive. Some people seem to receive 10.00 no matter what they do whereas some brilliant images never get ratings at all. Could someone please explain to me how the whole thing is supposed to work? What's the code here? :-) ~M~

Your perfectly correct in all that you say. The rating system is pretty much just a matter of the raters personal taste. I personally very selsom leave ratings and I certainly don't allow people to rate my work. This is why there is a choce when you post an image, on whether or not to allow rating. One mans Picasso is another mans toilet paper...:) If you want to rate, I would say to be honest and as fair as you can, but expect complaints for really low ratings like 5's or 6's... Colm...

I, like Colm, never allow ratings and I never give them. Comments, sure. This rating debate has raged on this site and others for a long time Marshmallowpie. Colm gave good advice, if you insist that you want to leave someone a rating, remember that many artists take it personally if you leave them less than a 10. Many don't care, but many more do and they know it. It's an ego thing. It used to be that when you gave someone a rating, everyone could see what you rated an image. You should have seen the trouble that caused. Lots of grudges and spiteful acts of vengeance. You can see they changed it now however, and it's for the better. "One mans Picasso is another mans toilet paper..." ...isn't that a redundancy Colm?...evil laugh Omen555 who doesn't care for Picasso's art.

Hello Marshmallowpie, As you have always been so kind with your comments about my pictures in the past, I thought I might add my thoughts about your Ratings topic. I have mentioned in the past that I have quite an extensive experience as a photographic judge so I feel reasonably qualified to take part. First of all my approach to being invited to comment on peoples work (which I always considered an honour) was to always look for what I liked about the image and not what I didn't like. I usually had to give it marks out of 20 so I would mentally divide it into three unofficial groups. Because the photographer at least took the trouble to prepare and enter a photograph I would give it 6 marks. For quality of image I would give it extra marks from 1-7 and for impact I would award it marks from 1-7. So if you entered a nicely composed image with nice tones and reasonably it was interesting you would get approx 15-16 marks. However, if you entered a photograph which didn't fulfill all the above criteria but had great impact, then I tore up my guidelines and gave it a twenty. But can we get this ratings thing into perspective? Renderosity provide a fantastic site of enourmous interest where we are given the opportunity to view (and perhaps) comment on other peoples photographs and vice versa. But hey, it's not a matter of life or death. Nobody's job is hanging on some adverse comments. It's all great fun so let's keep it that way. Or does this all suck?

Rate someone a "2" and then tell them and everyone you did it, even give an opinionated explanation why and see if it's a "matter of life or death" or not...you would think you just killed their dog or something. I vote it doest sucketh.

Hmmm, having recently joined a local camera club I have noticed that on competition nights no image ever received a mark below a 12/20. It is considered "Bad manners". Personally, I feel that if a photo deserves a 5 it should get a 5. The rating is meant as a guide to how other people view your work. As was mentioned earlier, some people will love an image - others will hate it. So what? The idea is to look at the average mark and judge for yourself how succesful it is. Take criticism with a pinch of salt! If YOU like the image - that's all that matters!

This is what I always think myself. I rate things whether or not "I" like them. Now just because I don't like them doesn't mean that they aren't good. I also follow one rule...If I truly like what I have done in a picture or anything for that matter, then that is all that matters. I do things for me!! And things that please me....If someone else gets enjoyment from what I do, that is my bonus to myself. If someone finds fault with something that I have done, then I will take that into consideration, doesn't mean I will always us their advice because to me advice is like opinions and another thing that I won't say her in the forum, but everyone has one...Some advice is great, like the advice I have been getting here on this forum...Its fabulous and I personally wouldn't change a thing. Always do what you like...because in the long run YOU are the one that needs to be pleased...And as my husband would say, "If it don't please you, then how will it please someone else" Leigh

I realise that this topic probably already has been discussed in and out, and you must all be sick of newbies like me bringing it up. I just didn't, and still don't, really, understand the policy. I have allowed people to rate my images because I thought that was what I was supposed to do...but to me it is quite worthless. I don't want this to be a competition thing. I'm on this site because I want to learn, more than anything else. I have stopped rating images and I'll stop allowing people to rate my images because I understand that it's not about the ratings.. First time I came here that's what I thought the whole thing was about, the people who introduced me to this site are people who won't be satisfied with anything less than a 10.00. Just as I find movie ratings in newspapers (like.. 1-6) completely useless, it's the same thing here. I totally understand why people want ratings on their images though, it is like a reward if they get a high rating and gives them motivation to be even better next time. Anyway thanks for putting up with me and this old topic. I gotta say, it's good to come here and get some positive feedback on my pictures.... I do photography as a school subject, and my teacher (who has worked as a professional photographer) has never said anything really positive about what I do. I think if it hadn't been for renderosity I wouldn't be doing photography anymore. ~M~

Let's just be completely honest here. The only thing that gets an enthusiastic 10+ at this place is (with a rare exception) a pic of titties, or some other sexual matter. This place seems to be overrun with hormonally uncontrollable teenagers. Do not allow ratings, just ask for comments, and maybe you will get some friendly and constructive feedback.

Colm_Jackson ( ) posted Wed, 28 February 2001 at 10:46 PM

a1000, I agree totally but I'm not so sure the majority of the H.U.T.'s are actually teenagers. I have been with this site since the day's when it only had about 200 members and was just a message board. I was quite afraid to speak to anyone or post for quite some time because I thought most were about 14-16. I soon found out that the vast majority are actually between 30 and 45...LOL

Marshmallowpie ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2001 at 2:52 AM

Well, sex sells, there's not much we can do to change that...I don't really see the artistic value in making an image of somebody who's naked just for the being naked bit. I mean there's a difference between crude and erotic. And hey I'm a teenager :P

Marshmallowpie ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2001 at 3:22 AM

Just browsing around in galleries again..how can some images (nudity ones) have around 200 viewings and no comments whatsoever? Beats me.. or actually it doesn't.

chunkynuts ( ) posted Thu, 01 March 2001 at 3:56 AM

I quite agree. As a amateur photographer I enjoy taking pictures of both male and female models (mainly female, I must confess). Some of the shots that I really like are the portrait shots with high contrast etc but these rarely do that well in the viewings when compared to those that show off a bit of lingerie or more! Not so strangely then, my most viewed piece is a high contrast nude! I do like the shot and it has received a fair number of comments but I wouldn't say it was my best one!

The funniest thing I ever saw posted at Renderosity was an image by member Versionthirteen titled, "COMPLETELY NUDE!!!!". Once you clicked on the thumbnail, you were greeted by an image mocking you for following your primitive carnal instincts. Now THAT is what I call affecting your target audience. I wish I had thought of it first but still glad that someone did. Can you imagine if HUNDREDS of thumbs hinting to sex and pornography were posted here only to link to images of actual art for art's sake? One thing for sure, your image view count would go up and thousands of perverts everywhere would despise you...but they still would keep clicking. snicker
