Subject: band shoot leads to 2 paying jobs!!!!

tvernuccio ( ) posted Tue, 20 September 2005 at 12:51 AM · edited Wed, 19 February 2025 at 8:36 AM

hi guys! well, today i brought printed images of the band into work to give to my friend, Brenda, the lead singer. Kemal and i printed her some 4 x 6's as a little gift.

well, first of all she LOVED the images we made. Then she went around showing everybody at the office. When i left work they were on one of the doctors' desks.

anyway, one lady who is working there as a temp said she wanted to hire us.

she wants us to shoot her dance team (she's a teacher or owner of a dance studio...something like that...i can't remember).

and...she wants us to do some portraits for her...mother/daughter pictures.

then another girl i work with said she wished she had seen the photos a day or two earlier because she would have hired us as photographers for her wedding in Feb. I doubt we would have accepted the job because we don't have any experience.

anyway, i told her that, and she said we could take group pictures and stuff at the reception after the wedding and also before the event. She said she would prefer we not shooting during the wedding because she felt like 3 photographers would be distracting.

then today at the restaurant, one lady i work with said she wants us to shoot her daughter's senior pictures this year.

there's also 4 different people at the restaurant who have said they want to hire us. they want family portraits, boyfriend/girlfriend portraits, and one guy wants portraits with him and his dog.

I'm really nervous guys...especially about the dance team. i'm nervous about doing posed shots...you know...directing people and stuff. well, i've done it but not a lot. OMG, i hope i'm ready for this!!! well, if nothing else, it'll be an adventure! :)

any suggestions/tips sure would be appreciated!!! thanks! :)

It is ettiquette....but From what I have read you are allowed to take pictures of children without consent.Just depends of what and where. Photographers display images in thier shops and at other public displays without consent. Cindy put in a thread here a bit back with a PDF on photography do's and don'ts A good read. Congrats..best of luck.

well here's one link on when to use model releases i think i had given you something to think about would be a backdrop you can rig up fairly easily, material, something to pose them on.. google for portrait photography or go check at your local library & look at the set ups they use.. guess it depends how involved you want to get.. an off camera light source would be good too... all depending where the shots will be taken... go & check out the dance studio where they practice beforehand don't worry, tween the 2 of you it'll be a great "creative adventure!"

Yeah, If you're getting into portraits and paid work, you will definitely need to invest in some kind of portable studio setup. Especially lighting... as you can't always use "available" light on location!

Here a link for reference:

Joe, you're absolutely right about that! Actually we're getting ready to buy portable lights. Kemal's birthday is Thursday and that's what he asked for. We're looking for a used set but so far haven't had any luck. We're gonna check out this one shop tomorrow. if we don't find it there, we're gonna bite the bullet and buy them new. I'll show kemal this link. he has found some decent deals online. Cindy, that's an fantastic idea about making our own backdrop to use! I'll definitely look into that further and see what i can come up with. i do remember that link you gave me, read it, and saved it. we did look at some sample releases and have one now as a start. You're right, Cindy...checking out the dance studio ahead of time is wise! Doug...thanks for that info. Pat, Rod...thanks for the support & encouragement. thanks a bunch guys for the advice, encouragement, and stuff!!!

Congrats to both of you. As a person who has been contacted because someone told someone, I know it feels great to be recommended and appreciated. (big smile) Way to go! Lights? I have a set of portables I got for around $700. Heavy, they are. And takes a while to set up. So far (grin), they've never left the house and the portability is just from one room (where I shoot) to another room (where they are stored)...LOL. Not sure if it was mentioned somewhere or not but if you're serious about lights, think long and hard before you pass on strobes. Fixed lights can get hot, require lots of power, etc. Good luck (and keep us posted)!

Pascale, thanks for that link 'cause it's a thread i never saw! That looks awesome and definitely like a must have! Chuck...yeah...sure does feel great. And ya know, getting feedback from people here in RR is FANTASTIC, but when you get feedback from the person you actually shot...oh man...smiles. Lights...we're gonna go look today. Yes, we're serious about lights. Please tell me more about your experience with strobes. Sure do appreciate you guys being supportive and helpful and stuff. I gotta tell ya, i'm trying hard not to be scared out of my mind! Last night when Kemal and i were in Joey's basement shooting pictures of the band rehearsing, Brenda, the lead singer, said she she wants us to hire us to do a photo shoot...of her, her daughter, and her granddaughters. she said she likes how i make her look good in pictures. i'm blown away. and yesterday the doctors, one of whom is also an artist and photographer, were going on and on about how much they loved my images. We'll see...if they REALLY like what i do, then they'll send some business our way! :) thanks again, guys!!!
