Subject: Very Basic Question-Am I close to understanding this?

I am reticent at times to post questions as I am so new. I am sure this has been covered previously probably countless times. Hate to ask a question and have the reply be, "Well, DUH!" I HAVE been reading tutorials (even finally broke down after years of computing and brought a printer to be able to print the tuts out). Still sometimes I want to know if I am going in the right direction before I get something set in my head.

My question involves base models, morphs, and mats(or skin textures).

As I have it figured now there are a few "base models". Victoria and Michael, Stephanie, Stephanie petite, etc. These are the main base figures or models.

Morphs change a targeted section of a particular base model, changing the body, portions of the body, or the face. This can be done by applying or injecting the morph. This doesn't change the base model other than their outline so to speak. It is as if they gotten cheek implants, some other form of plastic surgery to their face or body, gained or lost weight or gained or lost muscle mass. Still the same V3, she has just had some work done(extensively in some cases)

Mats are like skin textures. They contain the surface features of the skin like tone, blemishes, scars, tattoos, smoothness, body hair, etc. These can be applied over a base model or a base model that has been morphed.(Within reason. You can't take a raccoon skin and make it fit a buffalos body)

If I am correct in my understanding thus far, and the appropriately compatable character sets were used, could the following sort of thing be possible? You select the appropriate base model. Say you like the body on the Yaara product. You morph the body of the base model into the shape of Yaara's(I don't own many of these particular products I am just using them as examples). You now have a V3 or a Stephanie with the shape of the Yaara body. Say you don't like the elf face of the Yaara body. Instead you like the Tara head morph. You apply or inject that morph into the base model giving you the Tara head and the Yaara body. Finally you really like the skin texture of a third model(and some of these have clothing painted on them). For example lets say the En Vogue character. You apply the full body mat to the base model that you have morphed. So you have V3 with a Yaara body morph, a Tara head morph, covered with the full En Vogue mat. (This may in reality look pretty stupid or unnatural but I was going for very different looks I had seen to use as an example. I feel like Victor Frankenstein).

I know particular products have their own limitations but am I ANYWHERE close to understanding this correctly?

Thank you for your time and patience.
Cheers,
RWB64

Yes, you show a reasonable understanding of this. The others will have more to say, but I will just add that "MAT" files (abbreviation for "Materials") were originally an add-on to Poser 4. They were classified as "pose files" (filename.pz2), but they were used to apply materials settings and/or a texture file, often a jpeg, which was referred to by the MAT file, but not contained in it. Poser now includes a separate filetype (MT5) to apply materials settings, but it's still somewhat analogous to a MAT file.

You've got the gist of it. Any Mats and Morphs for a figure could be interchanged with any other Mats for Morphs for that figure.

Just to add to the confusion, some of the DAZ models have interchangeable morphs and textures, too. Examples: Victoria 3 and Stephanie Petite can share some of the same morphs right out of the box. Not all of the morphs are compatible but you can use a utility called Unimesh Morph Transfer to get them all swapped over. Several other models, David and Mike 3 also have this characteristic. All the "Unimesh" models are pretty much texture compatible, with a few minor differences. One exception is Aiko 3, who, although will accept V3/M3/SP/David textures, can't use the default MATs for these models, since A3 has extra material zones on the legs. Older DAZ models, Mike 1 and 2 (the same mesh, except for the built in morphs) can share textures with Stephanie (the original Steph, that is) since they are based on the same mesh.

Coppula eam se non posit acceptera jocularum.

Do a forum search on "Frankenstein" and you should find several threads on attaching the head from one figure onto another. It's been done many times. Victoria's head on Posette's body and visa versa.
