THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: Anyone with the very latest copy of Bryce willing to test a model for me?

forester ( ) posted Sat, 19 November 2005 at 2:28 PM Ā· edited Mon, 13 January 2025 at 1:18 PM

It is a very large model in two *.3ds file formats. I have only the older version of Bryce, and the model will not import into it correctly. I'd like to text this in the newer Bryce version. Would someone be willing to download my model and test to see if it imports correctly? If the model loads OK, it's yours to keep. (Cari's Crab Shack can be seen in forester's store. Thanks folks!

Thank you Marcfx. The zipped file is almost 4mb in size, so you may want to download it instead. Please go to this web site and download it from there. The thumbnail shows you what happens when I try to load any of the standard *.3ds or *,obj file formatted versions into my older copy of Bryce.

OK Pam. I'll give it a go as soon as possible. Marc

Pam. Here is a picture of what came out. Pic 1 (top left) The opened 3ds file imported into Bryce 5.5c. You can see its split into 2 parts and when joining them together (quite easily) you have the whole cabin with nothing (that i can see) missing. I have had freebies before like this and I'm not sure why it does it. cant help there, sorry. I hope this helps. Best wishes Marc

Yes, please, would you mind. I would sure like to be able to be able sell this model. I made it for Bryce and Vue users. I believe that I am running into an excessive vertices or excessive polygon problem. If you will send the "fixed" model to me, I will be happy to give you the Fish Market model in exchange. it is complete now but now yet approved for sale in Renderosity. And, ... I've tested it in Bryce - it does work just fine. My e-mail address is sprucefir@earthlink.net

Erlik ( ) posted Sat, 19 November 2005 at 5:19 PM

Ah, if you done the model in Max, that appears to be the problem with X-transform or whatever. In max everything looks fine, but when you export into 3DS and import into Bryce, there are parts offset from the rest. There was a fix described here in forum. IIRC, you just have to set that X transform to zero in max. I've got a downloaded freebie or two like that. for instance, DeEpona's ship San Juan. Marc, I wouldn't put too much trust into Bryce OBJ export capabilities. BTW, forester, if I may suggest, lower the number of parts seriously. 782 is way, way, way too high. Otherwise it's a beautiful model.

@Erlik "I wouldn't put too much trust into Bryce OBJ export capabilities" Why is that a big problem then?

If you mean OBJ as in Wavefront OBJ, Bryce simply cannot tune the mesh as well as modelling programs. If you meant OBJ as Bryce OBP, no problem at all. Judging by the size of the archive, you saved it as OBP, right? But in that case it cannot be imported into Vue.

Yes, sorry, it is in OBP (Object Present) format.... Thanks for that tip. :)

Thanks guys. Erlik, I know this is a big model. This was the "high resolution version." I also made it in medium and in low resolution versions. Sophie also tested this and she got a slightly different, but disjointed result. That gave me a clue, so I tried importing it in my copy of Bryce 5, and got three different results out of five tries. So, it definitely is an excessive something result. I suspect excessive vertices, rather than excessive polys. Marcfx, I would like to have it in *.obp format, if you haven't already done so. The model is already posted for sale in *.3ds and in Vue4 formats. I was able to get it into Vue 5 and Vue 5I as well. And I could easily load it into Poser 4, Truespace and CD4. Just not into Bryce. Strange????? (And BTW, a great guess about my using MAX.)

Erlik ( ) posted Sat, 19 November 2005 at 6:07 PM

Ooops. Now you've reminded me. Bryce 5 had a limit of importing 512 pieces at one time. Bryce 5.5 apparently doesn't have it outright, but it imports the shack in one group grouped with a bunch of parts. I'd bet if I went and counted, the group would have 512 parts, and the rest up to 782 would be outside that group. You'll have to lower the number of parts apparently. What you could do is to join all the boards that share the same material, for instance. The mapping will remain the same. Otherwise, the trick to import a 512+ parts model was/is to create a box that contains the model completely. No part of the model may stick outside the box. Export less than 512 parts together with the box. Import into Bryce, delete the box, leave everything else as is. Repeat with the remaining parts and the box. If you didn't touch anything in Bryce, the parts will keep their relative positions, so you just need to group them together, save as a library preset and then export as an OBP.

Ah ha!!!!!! The high rez version has interior and exterior pieces, so its way over 512 individual items. Thank you both, gentlemen!!!! Marcfx, nothing has come through in my e-mail yet. I should be able to receive a 10MB file with no problem. If the mailed version is bouncing back at you, would you please let me know. I'll ask you to jettison the interior furniture in that model (and that will not break my heart). BTW, here's a pic of the Fish Market model. Erlik, I'll be sending you a copy of this one too, for your help. Just as soon as Marcfx is able to get me the *.opb version of the Crabshack.

Looks like a great model Foley, where is it on sale? 8) Catlin

You've just answered my email question, now only the file splitter question needs an answer! LOL

Hi Catlin. The Crabshack versions for Vue and *.3ds have been released for sale here, but, as you can see, I was having trouble with the Bryce version. The Fish Market model is in the "queue" to be tested here before being released for sale. Probably be next Friday before it hits the Marketplace. And, then there is the big Pier and Wharf Kit with lots of pieces, the Dockside Tavern model, the Bait Shop, the Ship's Chandelry (parts store), the Boat Hoist and Repair Shop, and Tim's Float Plane Service. Two of these latter are more or less done. But I can only push them through the Marketplace queue at the rate of one or two a week. My intent was to make enough things that we all could make good high resolution harbor and dockside scenes however we want. I'm a long time fan of the ocean. The new Bryce and Vue make a lot of good things possible. (And besides, I inadvertantly spent all summer *4 months) working for Habitat for Humanity in Albuquerque. Too darn far from the ocean, and not a single bit of time for model-building. So, I am just having fun, and hopefully contributing a little bit to the community in a small way.)

forester ( ) posted Sat, 19 November 2005 at 6:32 PM

Marcfx, coud you just delete the interior furniture, and then try sending it to me again. (Although, its probably the texture files that are clogging it up.) Alternatively, if you live in the US, I'm not in a hurry. I would ask you to burn it to a CD and mail it to me. I'll cover the postage.

catlin_mc ( ) posted Sat, 19 November 2005 at 8:43 PM

If you're looking for more testers forester I'd be very happy to help. I've used Bryce for about 5 years and used to come here every day but I've been absent for a long time. It would also help me get back into Bryce. 8) Catlin

For sending large files to people have you tried filefactory. You can upload up to 500mb files, and only the people you let know the link can download, and you can remove the files as easily, once the person has downloaded. It works well for me, and its a free service. These look like great models.
