Just finished this capital ship model, and I have no clue what to do about the texturing and colors. I was thinking either a jet black body with green lights, or maybe a yellow body with blue for an Egyptian type look. I also would like to put a hull plating bump map on it, but seeing as how the model is over 45,000 polygons, I'm a bit leery of doing this.

Hmmm ... steel hull plating texture complemented with red lights would look nice in my opinion.

Or .... you could do a whole fleet of multi colored ships! Cool design btw.

you could turn the descending antennae (?) a glowing color, like red or blue..'stwhat I'd do..;)

Hi Rob, its been a while;) Excellent model there mate, maybe some flat yellow would do the trick. Make it all space gritty and dont forget not to include the rust, or pidjy will have some baby sea turtles lol Look forward to seeing it finished;)

I never intended to make art.

Really original model you have there!! Looks great! Being a Chris Foss fan, I can't help thinking that one of his bright visual styles would really suit your model... Why not go over to his site and soak up some inspiration? Garry

Different colors for different greebles maybe? Metal textures of different types. Some parts with little lights, other parts without little lights. A bit of variation in surface textures would probably enhance the feeling of size on this ship and makes it interesting to look at too :)

Does anyone know who did the EE 'Doc' SMITH (Lensmen) Paperback covers?

I read some of the EE Doc Smith Lensman series..they just don't turn up that much. Have to laugh about the texture scheme on that 70's ship..looks like it would be piloted by Crash Test Dummies (the mannequins, not the band..;)

Oh yeah, EE Doc Smith! I read all his stuff as a lad! I'll have to see if I can find some of his stuff and some of the Foss books. We have a huge number of new and used book stores in Portland.

pakled ( ) posted Thu, 15 December 2005 at 4:59 PM

I've only found about 3-4 books (could check at home, that's where my database is..;) There's some website called American Bookseller's Exchanges (sort of a national swap meet for used book stores; you ask if you can find things [in or out of print], and people will let you know how to buy it from them)

You can see the EE Doc Smith range in reasonable detail at the link... I believe he did most, if not all of these - I have a number of them reproduced in Paper Tiger books identified as his... As far as I can tell Chris Foss was the man Panther turned to when they wanted a science fiction cover in the early '70's... As well as EE DOc Smith, Foss did van Vogt: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~we8y-mrt/vanvogt/coverart/awaybeyondpanther.jpg ...Asimov: http://www.sfreviews.com/displays/Isaac%20Asimov_1955_The%20End%20Of%20Eternity.htm Garry

Thanks very much for the help and encouragement. After getting my roommate's reaction to the yellow/blue colors, I think I'll shove off more in the direction of the black/green and make it as imposing as possible. Isaac Asimov is one of the greatest SF authors of all time, IMHO. I especially like "Asimov's Mysteries": a collection of some of the best mystery stories ever written. Hmm... maybe I'll try out UVMapper for this one. I've heard so many great things about it; maybe it's time to abandon Wings' included UV mapping engine for a more specialized program.
