Argh, I'm so frustrated. I remember seeing in a post long ago (that I cannot currently find) about a P6 node that will allow you to change a texture map into a greyscale map for use as a bumpmap for instance (I know, I know that de-saturating a texture map is not as good as a true greyscale but I'm willing to overlook that at the moment ;) Would appeciate it if you could refresh my memory and thanks in advance.

You can either plug the map into a math node (which ignores colour information), or into the hsv node (with Saturation set to zero).
