Subject: Golf Ball texture?

mywaza ( ) posted Sun, 08 January 2006 at 12:46 AM · edited Mon, 27 January 2025 at 9:04 AM

I have found many textures and considered making my own - unless there is already a golf-ball texture. I need to apply it to a sphere for my daughters project. Yes, I need to make a golf ball. Perhaps I'll look for that for import... I would like to have a texture map though. Cheers,

Well, the Vue stock Snow texture, with some tweaking, could be a great golf ball texture - it has a good bump map.

The problem is that I am not familiar with editing texture maps or modifying snow into golf ball dimples. I am under time pressures here and though I could photograph a golf ball for the shoot. Now I am going with Vue - possibly. Can you point me in the right direction?

Hmmm, well snapping a photo of a golf ball would work, because you can make a texture from an image in Vue... Other than that, I dunno...

Is a Vue golf ball okay?

Check the link. :) Oops, sorry, the link was wrong. I went to the freestuff page and did a search for "golf ball" and at the top of the list was a Vue golf ball.

It's made by SilverHawke. You can also get it at this link. :)

Here's an attempt at a purely procedural texture mapped to a sphere primitive. It's not perfect - there is texture stretching at the poles and a seam on one side - but it can be tweaked in the function editor and might do for what you wanted. You can get it at the link, remember to rename the extension to mat.

You can eliminate the seam by setting the mat and bump scale values to 1 - I just tried it. The pole stretching is still present however.

Thanks, that's useful - I'll give it another look and try that.
