My God man, where are you?????? I need your advice oh mighty mentor of falling drops! #:oP I tried to shoot that falling waterdrop yesterday, but out of 200+ shots these were the only ones that actually contained some kind of drop or impact. It was alot harder than i thought it would be....not so good with multi-tasking, so trying to hold the shutter down while aiming those drops wasnt easy at all. And it turns out i cant take sequential (???) shots with my remote...sigh. What shutterspeed do you guys normally take these kinds of shots with? I managed to yank mine up to 1/1600 s with two 500W halogen lights lighting the "scene". I never bothered with the ISO though...hmmmm...come to think of it i might have had that set to either Auto or 50...no wonder some came out dark huh? And the heat radiating from those lights...OMG!!! Wasnt easy at all. Any pointers youd like to share? Thank God i was lucky enough to capture that icicle-drop that i uploaded yesterday though. It totally compensated this poor first attempt. #:oP

hi! this shots are stunning! for the formation and the incredible light! cannot understand how have you did this with a lamp!!!! usually i go out of home and work with strong sunlight... (see my past droplets shot)... i've try this kind of shots with a shutter speed of 1/1000 (the minimum of the olympus c740) more little value are surely better... must to try it with eos350 :) btw... awesome reportage :)

Hey these are really good - some very nice shots Andreas.
So your problem is with consistency not getting a great shot.

I have never tried to do it by lighting the whole scene and shooting I have always used flash. Thats what all the electronics was about - and I'll help you with that if you want to do it that way. So my camera shutter was open for 2 or 3 seconds which gave me time to aim and do the drop, the flash fired for the splash so that was all that was exposed.

You could try using your cameras built in flash, I have in the past used that and it work out quite well, but is still trial and error so you will get rejects.

When I used built in flash I set the camera on manual 1/60th, F8, ISO50, Flash -fire always, timer to 2 secs, focus manual to just in front of where the drop will fall. The room has to be dimly lit !

I then set off the camera with it's 2 sec delay which gave me just enough time listening to the bleeps to get ready to do the drop so it would splash for when they finished.

Good luck with it - these shots are superb Andreas just need that consistency [or a lot of patience].

I filled up a big pot that are used for boiling "spaghetti".....and it almost got boiling under those EXTREMELY hot lights as well! I just got an email from this magazine that recently published a photo of mine. They said they wanted to give me a "photo-book" with my collected work so to speak. So now i need to send them a DVD with 100 photos that they are gonna print and then bind the book and inscript it and everything. So now im busy busy busy finding 100 photos i want printed. Maybe i shall include these three as well?

That is great new Andreas! Just be sure it isn't a scam where they run off with your photos for their own use. If it is from a magazine then I am sure you are okay though. I like these there, but why not make them into one - 3 image photo? That way you get more of your other stuff too! ;] Pssst! Go look at the OT thread about 4 threads down...

Sweet droplet shots Andreas!!! I gave up thinking about trying this after researching the original posts a few weeks ago...after I found out a person had to be "Mr. Science" to construct all the electronic gadgetry to get a decent set-up...lol Looks like you've shown it can be done with just hard work...congrats!

Andreas..so how did the magazine get to see your work in the first event? That info might help some of us! Not that I have 100 mag quality photos or even 100 gallery ones or 100 I want hanging on walls, even if nicely matted and framed? And...the water...yikes, I spoke to myself today..get a life it said..I have a life..now it is to try get some water drop shots. The first try in the kitchen sink was a perfect drop just before impact but this will require some setup, me thinks. Best to you on the photo magazine! Tom.

Zacko ( ) posted Fri, 13 January 2006 at 2:02 AM

How i got the magazine to view my photos in the first place? Well i just emailed them a few. They publish 10 amatour-photos each issue. And i just guess ive been lucky. Cause ive gotten 2 photos published each month since september, and they get thousands of photos sent to them every month. But this last issue one of my photos (The Gathering) got spread across two whole pages, so this "photobook" theyre giving me was some kind of payment/prize for that i guess. Wasnt easy picking out 100 shots for that book...but now im done...phew. Better mail that CD now. See ya! #:O)
